Oil in my starter- some rookie questions.....

I went to ultima starters for both of my bikes they are about 180.00 new and so far very impressed with them. Not sure if fitment but I have them on both lsd and rsd bikes.

Would it be safe to assume Harley figured the problem with Dropped Starter quite few years or decades ago....?
Possibly...the DSSC never took off. Maybe the starter is too low in the splash area.

They moved the mounting bolts and adjusted the angle the starter so it sits lower. I believe the ring gear on our clutch pack is smaller too.

Maybe next time I take my 04 primary off I'll measure it, although I haven't had to take that thing off in years.

Removing starter on 2005 Chopper. I think a recent noise I have been experiencing is the pinion shaft not receding properly due to grime. I want to remove it and do a full cleaning and replace what is necessary. I will also confirm that oil relief groove is cut in the half moon spot. My question is how much do I need to remove to get the starter out. Does the final drive gear housing need to come off? - Pipes? Since it is an O5 I don't think I need to break open the primary case again.

I tried getting my starter out the right hand side but it was a PITA, so I went into it from the top.,.. seemed to be easier. You don't need to pull the primary cover.., I have a 2005 chopper also.

On K9 it can be done from the right side , I think I even had my V&H pipes on but it was pain in the ass to wiggle out.

I looked at a complete rebuild, but in his honorable style Curtis guided me to refrain from spending unnecessary money and to break it down and only replace what is needed. I hope Curtis does not mind my quoting him.

"Generally all the starters need is a break down and good cleaning. Occasionally they need a part here or there but it is never the same thing from starter to starter. You are far better off stripping it down and then ordering what you need verses trying to guess at it first. The solenoid is not a failure prone item so unless it was getting weak or not functioning at all I wouldn't replace it."

I have a Mastiff and if you can pull the clutch cover/belt guard off without removing the pipes your good on the pipes, I have to also loosen the back tire/belt to get it out of the way also, the drive pulley doesn't have to come off the tranny. Some say they lift out the battery box and lift the starter out the top, I prefer not to mess with all the wiring with it being zip tied together.
Disconnect the battery before removing any of the wires on the starter first.
Ridgebacks and Pitbulls are much easier and you can get them out the left side. Good luck:old2:
