I use the Harley chrome filter, never any issues and hand tighten only.

I've had a K&P on both my dogs (same one, I think) for over 90K never a problem.

Generally hand tighten then another 1/4 turn with the filter wrench and you're good to go if you don't want to break out the torque wrench.
I have never had an issue with the K&P.
Always clean and re-lube the gasket before reinstallation.
