Met a guy yesterday that has a 2007 Mastiff was doing an oil change realized he had the wrong filter, he left the old filter on bike put new oil in so he could ride yesterday, his question is can he change his oil filter without losing a bunch of oil since it's brand new that he just put in. I told him I had no clue that I'll ask my group

Well, I look at it this way, when you change the oil in your car, you leave oil in the motor still. And there don't ever seem to be a problem with that. So I say change the oil as you should and don't sweat the extra expense on the scavenger.

Couple of different factors to consider, first of which is we are talking an air cooled engine,
Second the car gets drained from the pan (below engine) bike gets drained from tank so there is more oil in the bike sump than is left in the car.
Over the life of the bike the cost is not significant and lowers if you have multiple bikes that use the same one. (Or share on with you buddy)
I look at it like buying the permenant oil filter -- long term investment.

You could also drain the oil, fill the oil tank, but leave the filter off, start the bike, let it run till fresh oil starts coming out. Of course put a pan under the bike to catch the oil. Same results as the scavenger. I've done it this way before. And no you don't end up with oil all over the place. The oil flows out slow. It don't shoot out. And if you can make a homemade funnel it's even less of a mess.
