Maybe a stupid question.

How effective is the oil cooler kit? Looking to put one on my bike but still not to sure about it.:confused:

Any feedback would be awesome.:2thumbs:

I don't have an oil temperature guage, so I can't give you a real answer. On the open road it seems to be cooler. All of my bikes are air cooled and all have oil coolers but it may just be a placebo effect for me.

Funny question that I have gotten is the person who wanted to know if the oil cooler was a nitrous bottle.

Been running the BDM one since just after getting the bike. I like having the extra oil in general and I'm sure it is running cooler on the road. Only down side is that in cooler weather it can cool the ending too much. If I'm going to be riding in 60 degrees or below (pretty much Nov -Mar here), then I put a leather cover over the radiator. Some recommend a oil by-pass switch for the winter, but to me that's just one more failure point and you loose the use of the extra oil.

Pro-One makes a nice cooler with a built-in temp gauge in the top. Probably can't see it while riding, but stopped in traffic it would be a handy thing. I know even with the oil cooler, stopped traffic in the summer ain't a good thing (begin the Hoat system of lane spliting!!!)

And ya, like 2Many, I get the uneducated comments like "Nice Nitrous Bottle!" :loony:

So have to explain some basic stuff (all part of the Rider Education Program) :up:

I have also been kickin around installing a oil cooler being down here in FLA.
Since last week the temp dropped from about 90-92 down to 78-82 during the day. With good ol' Shell V-Power in the bike it runs like a scalded Dog and I have been loving it. What a difference. I wondered if the cooler on a 90 degree day would drop the oil temp that 10 degrees all the time to make it run better all the time.

I put on the finned cooler that slides over the oil filter $30, how much it helps I don't know but it looks good :)

I'm Chacha on the added oil. Big benifit there for sure. I don't have one but I can see the "other side".

Back in the 90's I got to spend a lot of time with some HD engineers and that question poped up. Their response about the evo motors was "If you needed one we would have put one on. We test these bikes out in the desert and have had no problems." They also said that if I wanted to put one on to only use one that had the thermostat because cold oil was more detrimental than hot oil. The EVO motor didn't have the heat related problems that the earlier motors did. I wonder what S&S's response would be today. Anyone have an in at S&S?

The arrogance of HD :angry: They test them and then relax the tolerances for production and the public does the real testing. If you don't believe it look at the history of all HD motors.

shovels, evos and twin cams all had cam bearing issues. wtf they didn't learn the first time. Oversize the bearings

I'm not sure why some American companies have this attitude. Phx PD just bought 40 new Hondas after testing them and the Harley for a year. They wanted to buy Harleys but the Harley high maintenance and other factors caused them to buy the Honda. I wonder how many other Police Depts will decide the same thing

Yes, I do have one on the Dragon, and both Harleys too. Except for the sporadic parade, it never really gets hot enough to "really" need one, but I'm going for keeping the oil temp more consistent. Harley version comes with thermostat. Dog at "normal" Fall and Spring temps? Remains to be seen. Got email from dealer today, pickup for shipment home has been scheduled.

Gotta balance the shiny stuff port an' starboard, fore an' aft, so have stash tube too. Nitrous? "Naw man, that's where I stash my weed..." (fm old Saturday Night Live) But must remember turn the tube upside down - can't get stuff out the way it was installed.

Harley testing engineers don't keep the same bike running year in and year out and pay their own repair $$. We do.

How many years did the ivory tower say to not use synthetic oil? Now, the Primary Spousal Unit's CVO Dyna came from the factory with synthetic. Our Hogs have always gotten us home, but Harley engineering often has a marketing spin.
