A few months ago i’ve rebuild the engine and i’m a little worried about the oil temperature.
It’s a dyna and the oiltank is under the transmission and i think the oil is getting to hot.
So i’m installing an oilcooler. I’ve ordered a Jagg 4550 filter adapter with thermostat.
The lockhart radiator i already have is very small, the capacity is very low. So i purchased a bigger one.
Now i’m thinking to put a second oil tank in the cooler circuit on the outlet side of the radiator.
Probably you think, what’s the question here? I don’t really know, i’m just curious if i am forgetting something?

Cooler isn’t always better as far as oil is concerned. I just asked AI and it confirmed what I previously had thought (220 is best)—AI reported that for the V-twins, 215 to 250 degrees (F) is the optimal range for oil performance. Did you check your oil temp with a guage? I looked at the Jaag 4550 online but couldn’t find any temp specs for it. But it’s for HD, so Hopefully the thermostat is preset?

There is no temperature mentioned in the manual of the Jagg4550.

I will instal temperature gauge. Before the overhaul of the engine i had a lockhart radiator and the thermostat.
It didn’t take long for the thermostat to open and the heat from the radiator was about 130*C and that is about 267*F
Searching on the internet i found that a cooler was a good idea but the lockhart didn’t do much. And now i’m trying this jagg 4550 thermostat and a bigger radiator.

The engine was really ruined
probably it wil not run as hot as before but i’m a better be safe then sorry guy.

Wow! That was pretty shot out. The Jagg cooler should help with the oil temp. Keep us posted! Hope all is well in Kampen!

Yes, pretty bad condition. But now al is renewed and i’ve got it up & running and after the first 100mls the filter & oil are changed. Probably it is not running hot like before but still i want to be sure.

It also had massive oil blow by and i suspected the rotating valve thingy and that one is replaced by one that doesn’t rotate.
Now after al i just see one drop of oil coming from the breather bolts.

I really think that if the oil was kept in a tank under the seat instead of under the transmission it would have been a bit cooler.
The transmission also generates his own heat. I think, more of a guess.

I first used this cap to attach a few magnets to a five-millimeter threaded rod so I could see if there was any metal hanging around in the engine.
Now that the thermostat and radiator are installed, I want to monitor the temperature for a while in warmer weather. I want to do this with a digital meat thermometer.
The threaded rod has been removed, and the temperature sensor fits nicely through the hole and slides down the shaft.
It now sits nicely in the oil, and the meter generates a graph over the entire period.
As you can see, a section of the timeline has disappeared; the connector had come loose. I'll fix this later.
To be able to take the meter with me, I screwed two Sportster panniers onto the Dyna. I found these secondhand somewhere for a few euros, and they're now securely fastened with a few pieces of metal tubing. Not pretty, but handy. It's a shame the keys didn't come with the panniers.
