I have been searching this site trying to find out whether or not it is a good idea to install a set of oil coolers on my 08 K-9. I know that my old harley (76 shovel) had them installed from the factory and I was running 70 weight oil with a temp around 270 in the summer. I Live in Louisiana and right now with humidity temps have been hovering around low 100's. I have no clue what the oil temp is on my new bike as there is no way to drop a dip stick in with a thermometer on it that I have found around here at any of the shops. I have pretty much been riding my dog everyday to combat fuel cost, as well as rides on the weekends with friends.

I know that they are supposed to extend the live of your motor, but are they really that helpful on this large motor to cool your oil temp down 10 degrees or so?

Also will the oil pump have enough stroke at a low rpm (idle) to push my oil in the top of engine as well as through the cooler?

I do get stop periodically in traffic in the afternoon, but not more than a few min. I take back roads to avoid this not only so I dont cook in the heat from the bike and road but, to avoid my bike sitting without air flowing across it and avoid all those people that are not paying attention on their way home.

Your $.02 is greatly appreciated.

Also if you can offer up any suggestions a decent set up please let me know cause I really dont like the look of the ones BDM offers.

I set up my 07' K-9 with two oil coolers one on each downtube...It was done during the first service check... In Hawaii it is warm all the time and I get quite a few stop and go traffic areas.. I've had no problems and it seems to run cooler than my riding partners Ridgeback (no oil coolers):up: .. They look pretty cool....I mean the duals ...better than one oil cooler and one stash tube :2thumbs: ...

Yes it is worth it. Also depending on your mileage you should change to synthetic.

There are a few on here that seem to think these are BS but I've done some testing and there is a 30 degree temp difference between my scoot and my neighbors harley.

I put two of the BDM coolers on my bike and changed to synthetic after going to laughlin and hearing some weird noises and my pipes getting so hot I'm sure my bike had to be close to overheating.

I realize AZ has some higher temps than most places but they work

I bought 2 oil cooler kits from Nelson, easy to install and you end up with a spare oil line. As BB said needed here in FL

if you are in traffic, 10 oil coolers are not going to help [standing still]
BUTyou start to move down the road, and you have air cooling oil stright away!
not the engine has to cool down so the oil flowing inside the engine can cool down. and if you go with big dog coolers, wash them out with brake spray cleaner,
bro, it can,t hurt having on the down tubes
