Oil cap

Apparently the rubber ribs on my oil tank filler cap have worn enough now that the oil cap pops off the tank while riding. When I arrive home and remove the seat to plug in the battery tender, there sits my oil cap, just behind the filler neck and in front of the battery. No mess yet, but it's happened twice in the last two weeks, and it's sure to cause a problem in the future. Not to mention the fact that I don't like shit that doesn't work as intended. Anyway, anybody know if there are and harley parts that are compatible, or have a line on where to get a new BDM cap? Thanks in advance.

Mine does the same. i believe im on my 3rd.It has gotten worse w engine wear and crankcase pressure. . used Harley style last time. i think it was 2000 Softail.. ill check when im home and let you know.hopefuly my rebuild will help w this problem

Thanks, Chris-I'll just pop it off and carry it in to the harley dealer if that's the case. But now you have me wondering about excess crankcase pressure.

I used to have the same problem with my 2000 heritage springer. The cap did not pop off but would leak from being loose. There is a groove at the base of the metal cap that you can put an o ring into and it will solve all the issues. Got mine from the hardware store. Just dont get one that is overly thick. It takes a pretty good push to seat it but it will not leak or come out.

Tried the late model softtail, too large in diameter. Guess the next step is the hardware store for an o-ring.

Woke up this mornin', pulled my head out of my ass, and called BDM. They have "tons" of oil caps in stock, being shipped for only 10 bucks. Sorry to bother everybody, and thanks for the responses anyway.

Hey Mike-don't worry bout draggin' me down, my mind works that way, too. Always goin' to the "what if's" to anticipate all possible future problems and get a head start on the solutions. I don't think I'll have a problem with a new cap, though, since the old one pretty much just slides out of the filler neck with little or no resistance. I think the ribs on the rubber stopper have finally simply aged to the point where they're no longer effective, but we'll see in a couple of days. If so, however, could I have a crankcase pressure issue? No oil leaks anywhere. Got my fingers crossed.

Just in case anybody's still following this trivial thread, here's the update. Got the new cap, and it appears that the rubber ribs on the old one were merely worn down from time and use. The new one fits good and tight. So, at least for me, BDM came through, not only with the correct part, but also at a good price, and shipped on time. A fine experience. If I could, I'd give 'em rep points.
