Let me start off by saying I'm not very mechanically inclined. I know how to twist the throttle and make it go fast. Other that I really don't mess with it because it would cost me more to get someone to fix the mess I made and then fix the original problem. I dropped my dog of Saturday for the 2500 mile check-up which I think is basically an oil change. What would be a reasonable rate for this service at a big dog dealership?

Not sure the exact amount I do all my oil, tranny and primary changes myself. Depending on the type of liquids it can run between $50-100 bucks doing it yourself. (chrome filter-synth oils will change the price a bit. Sorry so vague just my .02 cents and thoughts. Go to the how to section and see the service thread that GAS did it will having you doing your own dog the next time and save ya a bunch.

According to my 2005 owners manual, these are the 2500 mile service items:
Change engine oil and filter
Inspect air cleaner and service as required
Inspect petcock fuel filter screen and service as required
Check and adjust primary chain
Check and adjust clutch
Change transmission lubricant / clean magnetic plug
Check and lubricate throw-out bearing and clutch rod
Inspect brake pads and disks for wear
Inspect oil lines and brake system for leaks
Lubricate brake and clutch levers - throttle and clutch cables
Inspect operation of throttle and enrichener controls
Inspect fuel valve, lines and fittings for leaks
Check rear swing arm pivot nut
Check all operations of electrical components and switches
Inspect and / or replace spark plugs as needed
Clean tappet screen
Download ignition module, forward to Customer Service
Clean battery connections
Test ride

I imagine at my dealer, that charges $105/hour, we're probably talking at least a couple hundred bucks. As others have said, there are some really great "how-tos" posted on this site that can get even the mechanically non-inclined through at least the basic stuff, like fluid changes.

Don't be surprised if it is a couple hundred $'s or so.

They do more than an oil change during scheduled maintenance intervals.

Most of what is done along with fluid change would be checking things and maybe making adjustments, lubing things etc.

Regardless, they alll take time.

My dealer, Arlen Ness, is a bit more pricey here in Northern California at $105/hour. However, if I travel to a guy i know in Jackson, it's only $75/hour.

I followed Gasman's post on how to service your Big Dog. It wasn't really much different then servicing my Harley. It was very easy and didn't take much time. Believe it or not, the most difficult part was trying to figure out how to remove the chrome piece covering my clutch pack and adjusting it without removing my pipes. I'm not advocating that you step out of your comfort zone but try to find a friend who is mechanically inclined to assist you.

I paid just short of $200 for my 2500 miles but that was a couple of years ago. It is more than an oil change but should run you reasonably in the 200-300 range if they do what is listed in manual. Make sure you ask for the a print out of the EHC download also.

I pull all 3 drain plugs (engine, primary, transmission) when i get home from a ride at night. I let them drain overnight. Then i follow Gasman's how to service your Bigdog. It takes me about 5 hours from start to finish. Not rushing, just going over everything really good. I'm sure the dealer would do it in half the time. Guaranteed it will be between $300-$400.
