Odometer readings

When I turn the key on I get a series of numbers in the odometer readout that are displayed for a few seconds. These are not trip miles or total miles. I normally leave my bike in the trip miles format so I can tell when it's time to refuel. Can anyone tell me what the other readouts are?

It is a self calibration of the speedometer "Pulse Mode" for measuring the mileage correctly
BTW, the pulse count you see flash up on your speedometer at power up is a one mile pulse count.
The field calibration consist of driving two miles.

Nomad can you tell me this. My speedo quiet working again the tack still works so if you hold down on the trip milage when you turn on the key the seedo jumps over to 120 if you hit the button one time it goes back to 60 if you then get on it and ride it the milage starts to rack up the faster you go the faster the miles rack up im talking like 10000 a mile down the rode. The more miles you rack up the higher the code number is.Ive had it from 560-50000. But i cant get the speedo to work.

How do you go about that.I was told that the sencor on the trans. had gone out.I was told that they would magnitize and when they did that you have to change the sencor.

T.Byrd,
You have put the speedometer in calibration mode when you hold the button and turn the key. You have to ride the bike 2 miles to finish the calibration. Exactly 2 miles. Don't breal traction and try to drive at 45 mph. Ensure the air pressure is correct in your tires. Find you a couple of mile markers somehwere.

Go to a starting point and turn the bike off and make sure the key is in the off position.
To go into calibration mode, hold the reset button and turn the key to the on position. Continue to hold it until the needle moves to full scale.
Release the reset button
Press the reset again and the needle will go to half scale. It is now ready to calibrate.
Drive two miles and stop. The speedometer odometer tracks the pulse count over the two mile period. The accumulated pulse count is ~98880
Again hit the reset button and it will display 1/2 the accumulated value from above.
The speedometer will exit calibration mode now and the pointer or needle will return to zero to complete the calibration.
This is for a 07 model but is the same for yours too I believe.

T.Byrd,
Lets us know how it turns out...

One a side note, are you planning to go to the bike Rally in Graham Kentucky August 14-17th. If I am not working I may be going up there from Clarksville Tn and meet up with some friends.

Nomad i've not been to that one but I was thinking about it.I'll let you know when it gets closer. When you said on cal. the speedo don't breal traction and try to drive 45 mph are they a certain speed that you are supposed to drive.I know that when you put it in this mode the higher the rpm's the faster the numbers climb on the milage.

Sorry about that spelling..

The manual said, tires will slightly increase in diameter as vehicle speed increases. To minimize this error, ride at a average speed during calibration.
"Approximately 45 MPH for most vehicles".

Tire slippage. Minimize this error by not breaking traction.

Speedometer accuracy depends on the accuracy of the measured two mile distance.

The speedometer calibration is based upon the number of pulses that the speedometer sensor generates in a two mile distance. This value is dependant upon several factors such as tire size, front and rear pulley size, sensor gear in the transmission and final drive ratios in the transmission.

Pulse count is set at the factory and cannot be changed unless a field calibration is performed

Dogvet can surely add or correct any info here.

I tried it today as a matter of fact I tried it about 8 times and came up with the same thing. The code # is 586 every time and the speedo still does not work, upon acceleration it jumps up to from40 mph to 120 mph it just depends onb how much you open it up.

I would ping Dogvet on the forum here and ask him. He just had surgery but has been dropping in and out doing a little posting.
He usually has a answer and is dead on from what I have read.
