I'm gonna try snd post a short video of us trying to start the bike.
First off... It's a bitch to start.
We've replaced the starter solenoid, the battery, and we put a trickle charger on it every night.
So why is it so difficult to start...wasn't like this when we bought it.
On top of starter issues... Now once it's started, as soon as it's warmed up and ready to ride... Pull clutch lever in and shift from N to 1st...it dies. Have to go thru this process a few times before we get lucky and we can get it in 1st gear and the bike stays running. What's it's problem now?

The battery must be 310 CCA minimum.

When you get it in 1st, does it jumps forward? If so, yes the clutch needs re-adjusting.

Battery is good.
If we try and start it in 1st it jumps forward.
If it's in N and we get it to start, putting it in gear makes it die. After a couple of tries it'll go into 1st and he can ride out with no problems.

sounds like the discs and steels are stuck together, probably from sitting too long. i had 2 brand new batteries that the dealer said were good, neither was worth a shit. what battery is it?

I think Franco hit it. Sounds like the clutch pack is either worn or needs adjusted. If it's lunging and dying you are going to warp the plates.

Sounds like your starter solenoid is just spinning. Also for a cold start give the throttle 2 twist to spray fuel into the carb. Then try to start it. You shouldn't hold the start button down for as long as you are that wears on the starter

After watching it again I am almost sure it is your solenoid. That whining sound is the solenoid spinning...it should not free spin like that .

Your clutch nut might got loose- hence your clutch not working properly and the starter gear jumping out of engagement
and/or not engageing properly.

My $ 0.02 worth.

We got a starter solenoid rebuild kit and put the new parts in... Did we do something wrong to cause it to "free spin " like that or is there something else causing the free spin?

Pauly may be on to something. Pull your primary and look at the clutch hub nut. You may be able to do this by just removing the inspection cover. What is sounds like to me is that your plunger is not engaging in the starter and is spinning without engaging. When you hit the start button the plunger should get pulled into the starter causing the gears to turn over. if its not making contact it won't turn over.

pulled the derby cover off, and readjusted the clutch, got it to a good spot so we put it all back together.
same problem.
how does one tighten the clutch nut without having the disc move as well?

You are going to need to pull the primary cover off to make the adjustment I don't think you can adjust it through the derby cover at least not in my experience.
