Noisy 117's?

When I took the bike for a spin, I told them I heard what sounded like some clanking. He told me that that's just how the new 117s are and they actually sent a couple back when they first got them because of the same thing and BigDog said that's how it is. I took out another one and it had the same noise (with exception of another noise I had heard... but that one's been resolved), but it just doesn't seem right.

They said a set of pipes will cover it up... which I do plan on getting... but at the same time, I don't want to mask a "problem".

Don't know about clanking, but my 2008 Mastiff was very noisey at first. I also thought something wasn't right. I have read on this forum that this is a common complaint with these motors and that they will quiet down with some miles. Must say now with 3000 miles it is much better but still somewhat loud. Also I'm getting used to it so it doesn't worry me anymore.

I always think I hear police siren's, but maybe this is directly related to the posted speed limits. Let her rip and few times, the engine will sound a quiet.

I always think I hear police siren's and not the engine. Let her rid a few times and the engine will sound very quiet.

It's "Lifestyles Honda" here in Mount Vernon, WA

The bike has just over 500 miles on it... yes I know, still being broken in. I hear it more-so on the low end... even while sitting there at idle. I don't know just how up it is though because it does get drowned out as the RPMs go up, but I do hear it even cruising around 50 in 4th and 5th.

Won't help too much... these stock pipes are just too damn quite. I had an HD guy raggin on me that it sure was quite for such a big bike. :flipa:

My bike has always had upper end lifter noise. Some claim the TP rocker boxs are louder  others say lifters need adjusting.I don't know or really care. The bike runs like a raped ape,and sounds great with the BR pipes on it.Being a certified tec -I'll deal with it when I need to.:job:

I asked my dealer about the same thing. They said its just the noise it makes, it should go away after some break in. I only got a little over 400 miles on it before I got shipped over to Afghanistan... I will be watching threads like this one though!

When did you go there and who with? It's still up in the air if we're going there or to Iraq and if in late November or mid January.

It does sound strange,but!!!

I just hit a grand on the 08 pitbull, I hear it too. I added the V&H pipes; which the neighbors aren't to happy about and mainly the wife. So I ordered the QQ big monster baffles. As to the noise; I am a novice, but the local tech says he sounds like the BIG DOG he is. By the way I just finished up a year in Kandahar:flag:, loved it; only came home cause I bought the dog and the wife said I had too. I work for the Corp of Engineers. Stay safe

I always add a half bottle of Lucus oil treatment at each oil change and I think my "07" 117 is fairly quiet running the S&S rocker boxes - no complaints here. Besides it helps with dry cylinder start-ups and more. It works for me.
