Need a little tech assistance.....got a noise coming from my drive train when i pull in the clutch and coast, it sounds like it's coming from the trans drive pulley....this all came about after I replaced a worn primary chain adjuster (plastic block) I had my bike up on the jack and at it's tighest point, I have about 3/4 " play in the primary chain....what are the symptoms of Having a primary chain to tight (noises)?

well still trying to troubleshoot the problem...i've narrowed it down to this...the noise (belt / pulley) is coming from the trans drive pulley, now when i have it up on the stand and rotate the tire in the forward direction, it makes the noise...when i rotate the tire in the reverse direction it doesn't make the noise....I have 14K miles on it and have never replaced the pulleys....

What noise? Grinding, bearing, belt rub? If your sure it's coming from the drive belt pulley then you may have to pull the primary and clutch and get back in there and look see.

If you think it's just a worn pulley or belt then spray some silicon or WD-40 on the belt and pulley and see if it silences the sound if so then you know what your issue is.

Keep us up to date.

Can you describe the noise?
yeah i knew this question would come up....didn't really know how to explain it accurately...but here it goes..
sounds like gears meshing in a dry transmission when you have it on the bench

Ray.....i sprayed silicon on it today when i had it up on the jack...still the same...my concern is that it may be leading to a trans issue....although the trans is smooth quiet and shifts better than any of the harleys i've owned.

why does it only only make the sound when i rotate the tire in the forward direction and not the reverse...that would kind of indicate to me it's not a trans problem...

I had an issue with mine where the pulley nut backed off. Only reason I knew it happened was cause everyday when I backed it out of the garage it made a rubbing sound. Didn't here it going forward. Took it to the shop and the lock bolts to the pulley had worn and the nut was backing off causing the pulley to walk on the shaft.

I'll find the picture and post it here.

On my 05 the pulley nut is locked in by two bolts. Mine wore probably from a loose nut and finally worked there way loose.

For the clutch you will need a 1 3/8" or some use a 32mm, front motor sprocket is 1 5/8". Don't know what your transmission sprocket will be but most likely one of the above. Clutch nut is left hand threaded. I use a 12" socket extention wrapped in a rag to lock the primary down to remove the nuts.
Follow the How To's on clutches to get those parts off. Jake has a nice one and so does Gas Man.

Yell if you need other help.
