no start, just buzz

That sounds great! So, there's one thing you said that's concerning and that's the starter was hard to install. The only thing that would cause that is the wire bundle running vertically up and down behind the transmission. If that bundle isn't spread out, meaning it's zip tied together, then it will interfere with the starter. Check and see if your starter is laying hard against those wires. If it is than the starter is off center. Here's a picture to show what I'm talking about. I had to re-do my wiring (took off zip ties in that area so the wires could spread out to make clearance between the trans and starter) because something similar happened to me. As you can see. I like my wiring to look good so I covered them up with (Black) loom covering...

Here's a front view, as you can see the zip tie was moved up some so the wires can spread out between the trans and starter, you can see how they flatten out behind the speed sensor there. That allows the starter to mount flush:

With that pic, you also have to remove the one end of the blue wire to get the starter out,:oldbang: I just ran into that with Ticey's and ran the harness wire on the outside of the blue wire and had no problem with the starter bolting up

On the ridge back you cant run the wire around the starter blue wire due to the way the bundle runs up through the trans mount and the length of wire. Believe me I tried it. Soft tails are routed differently and don't have the hole in the trans mount, see the photo below on how the hard tails wire routes up through the trans mount. Soft tails route to the rear of the trans mount and up. At least that's the way my 08 Mastiff does.

On my ridgeback that bundle of wires was on the outside of starter and when I rewired my TH module I ran them outside. No interferance with anything

Hmmm, Did you leave the seal on the starter when you installed it? Could it have rolled or got cut and jammed?

Sure ya can, I just did it on Monday to Ticey's Ridgeback, and the starter when in easy.:yesnod:

Yeah I don't have the extra slack to route mine that way. I ended up moving my wires a bit inboard towards the primary. I looked at it tonight and noticed that the pic I posted was a bit old...

OK... after wanting "accidentally" set my bike on fire i went to work for 6 weeks or so. Now that i have calmed down i took a look at the b!t$h again... i pulled the starter bolts out and with them out i can hear the jackshaft trying to extend. So i am assuming that i do not have the correct angle for the starter to engage the starter gear on the karata rear hub (terms are wrong i know but you know what i mean)...
I cant seem to find shims... do the shims just shim around the bolts like washers or do they fit around the hole for the jackshaft itself. I do not have any detailed instructions as i have said so im kinda running blind here.....
Brew it looks like the same setup. I do not believe i am binding with wiring but will double check..
Thoughts on how i am messing up?

Did you try just taking the starter cover off and shoving a screwdriver handle in to see if you can at least throw the Jack shaft? Just to rule out a weak starter?

If you can't throw it manually then we know it's alignment and I'd recommend starting over

I have not done that Th3Infamousl ... i was assuming it was all ok as it was just newly went through by a starter gen place that has been always great at their work. However, i understand the logic. I will try n do this though.

I hear ya, sucks haha. I'll be honest I'm not 100% sure how the starter mates into the whole karata setup. I'm just trying to rule out the obvious.

Might have to take that plate off and see how it all fits off the bike.

The starter mates up just like OEM, no tricks no mods and shouldn't require shims... Karata fabricated the back plate to match OEM specs.

Brew.... best way to see if it is mating up properly then is to remove the pulley and then chek to see if the starter gear is contacting the big ring starter gear correctly?

Got all wires clear. Now starter clicks like shaft is coming out but not spinning the starter gear
Pull the end cap off the solenoid (3 small screws) and push the plunger in with your finger. does that make a difference? ( Don't let it fly back out at ya:oldnono: or you might get some sparks! :oldeek: ) Is the copper ring on the plunger good and clean?:oldconfused: How about the other 2 contacts? :oldconfused:Just a thought!!

Including what Chubbs said, have you load checked your battery? Also make sure your compression reliefs are working correctly. Sounds like everything is aligned up now, if you can hear the starter engaging. Connect the battery via jumper cables to your car or truck but don't have the vehicle running. See if that spins it over, If it does then you know your battery is too weak.

Like Brew said, the Karata should fit right, no need for shims. It's the Ultama that has to be modified to fit. I'm with Eric about pushing the solenoid in to check the starter. One thing I would check, is to look and see if you have ant teeth damage, and did you grease the end of the jack shaft? If it is binding there, it won't fully engage. Also, I ran into this on mine, I had the starter redone, but was still having problems with the solenoid sticking. Take the backer plate off the solenoid and reach in the and see if you can wiggle it. Mine was loose, and I had to replace it. It bench tested ok, but wouldn't work on the bike. It's a sick feeling when the started won't disengage.
