No spring change for 585 cam

Hi guys,

I have searched and the consensus seems to be that no spring change for S&S 585 on a 117" S&S. The bike is a 2006 K9 with about 8k miles. 585 is plug and play right?

Putting 585 and S&S dual intake for now. Carb to follow later.
Bike has a supertrap 2-2.

I'm thinking 32/78 jets. I'll see what the shop goes for.

Thanks in advance for the spring question

I went that way. have 31 and 76 jets. VH2+2 PM & PM super Gas air cleaner. HP went to 98 and torque was 127. dropped a little in gas mileage though

The .585 will work just fine however with the 2006 model do you have the TP or S&S rocker boxes? Some guys have had alignment issues with the TP rockers and have changed over to the S&S rocker boxes.

TP or S&S boxes eh. I assume there is a telltale way to figure that out. I'll try the search for distinction and price if I have TP.

Thanks for the heads-up. The shop had to call BDM/S&S to make sure they didn't need the springs so I prefer double checking on my side to be sure they are doing the right thing the first time.

Not many K9s around here and probably none of them are cammed.
The guy looked at me like :loony:, a 117 isn't fast enough for ya?

I'm the "I want more power" type of gearhead.

TP vs. S&S top rocker boxes

For those that fall on this thread when searching for how to differentiate rocker boxes:

TP are 4 bolt top boxes

S&S are 6 bolt

Can't find anything on anyone with problems with TP boxes

Well, I searched and all I could seem to find was statements that TP boxes are good to swap out but no actual "I have an issue" thread...

Alignment issue as in, if you are carefull, you can get it right?

or

No matter what you do, it won't be right?

I am going back to the shop tomorrow and will check the top bolts but if anyone can give me some tips (or link) to get things right (if I have the TP boxes), that would be much appreciated.

Like I said before, they do plenty harley's but not sure they know the 117" all that well cause they called S&S/BDM to be sure the 585 I was telling them I wanted would fit straight in. From reading here, I fiured it would (BIG THANKS bdbiker COMMUNITY :2thumbs:)

Al - springs are OK. If 600 cams, then you should cange.

TP are similar, but not identical to SS. There have been problems of premature valve guide wear woth TP boxes. Having said that many here have TP with no problems. I had them and changed over to SS. One quick way to see if yours are OK, have the guys do a leak down test. If no compression lost, leave them on.

ok since this topic is brought up figured it be a good place to post my issue as well. I have a 05 pitbull w the vance big radius pipes the d&m spike cleaner and xxx taz carb with the 585 s&s cam. I recently took my bike to the shop to have my tp rocker boxes switched out for s&s. The shop is now having a tuning issue with my bike because its not running right now. They state that it falls flat on its face off of idle and then picks up. Any suggestions? There not to familar with bdm and im missing alot of nice riding days. The i know the last setup he tried the inter jet was 32 but i dont know the main jet size off hand and he claims it still isnt getting enough gas and ordered a bigger one. He says these carbs are a pain to tune since they dont have a air bleed and im wondering if he knows what hes doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

the working geometry of the TP valvetrain is just a little different than the S&S so what happens is the pushrods are at a slightly different angle causing unavoidable wear to the valve guides, eventually causing wear to other components and oil leaking past the guides. some have had no trouble and some have had lots of trouble. take with a grain of salt but keep an eye on your top end and an ear on your valvetrain for excessive noise. and yes, the TP is a flat top with 4 bolts and the S&S is a beveled top with 6 bolts. :2thumbs:

take a copy of this to your "mechanic" and tell him to look at part #13. S&S Cycle | Carb Quick Guide and then take your bike and run for the hills.

also, a suggestion. when you have an issue, start your own thread so as not to highjack the other thread and also so any responses to your problems don't get lost in the shuffle. there could be good information given but if you forget where you asked your question you won't know where to look.

Thanks for the TP top boxes feedback

I do have TP. 4 bolts on top.
I'll keep an eye and ear on it, thanks!

I am grateful for this site because I know I will be doing a lot of my own work and also learning somewhat in the process. I think I know more on Big Dogs than the shop... I told them we can't fit any type of pegs/grips on my bike and they insisted yes it's ok. They ordered a set and low and behold...:spank: the pegs/controls wouldn't fit!!! duh. Now I'm scared to let them put the cam in...
