:bang: "bout had enough of this problem child,'01 husky, talked to you guys last year about start issues burning starters and batteries up, the general census was to call vicky and get a start module, ordered one and three months later, i think mid august , i received the part. Installed said start module and rebuilt starter again bike started right up! sweet! Till the oil started pouring out the breather. s@#$. Got that straight then headed on out about 9pm 1st ride of '07 made it about 1 mile and it just died, still had lights but no fire. Did i mention just makin payments taps me,let alone what grief i get from the wife, especially after being towed home. So now its another season later,id love to be ridin but it just wont fire, i have 12 v at coil ,tried new plugs ,tried putting the old start relay back in instead of the module but the relay just clicks, plugged the module back cause at least it turns over. i bought the big dog manual but that really doesnt have any troubleshooting guides. Any help would be appreciated! im about ready to put her down

So there is no spark and you checked then I would think that the igintion needs some fidling with.

If there is spark then I would think that you may have a fuel problem.

I know that chacha's ride would die and he fixed it by replaceing a part in the camcover.

I don't know the 01's inside and out some other guys should be able to help you.

Welcome back!!!! post an intro

good luck

definately has fuel, but no spark, speedo does its thing when key is turned, thunderheart has no trouble lights on under dash, im pretty sure the start modules purpose is to send all juice to start system and override lights and all, at least thats what i was told, my lights stay on when shes turning over. i think ill pull the coil tomorrow nite and check it over.

Only the newer models eliminate the headlight while starting.
Have you load tested your battery. How old is it? I would say it's not putting out enough juice to start your bike.

Good luck,
Ray

hey Hunter,
keep the start module in the bike, way better than the relay!

If ya got no spark, first check the red led on the ignition module. it should flash every time the notch in the rotor cup passes the sensor. If it's not flashing, disconnecty the sensor plate from the module (connector with red, green and black wires). On the module side of the connector, turn on the key and run switch then short the green wire to the black wire. that should force a spark at the spark plug (big fun if you can get your ol lady or a friend to hold the spark plug!) if you get spark, the module is ok and you sensor plate is probably toast.

The oil puking is just the engine has wet sumped (oil has gotten past the check ball in the oil pump) Messy but not a problem just a bit of crud in the check ball). I'll be more than happy to help you figure out your problem the old bikes had some prettu specific types of problems connections being one of them. Feel free to PM me and I'll give you some more things to check out. Be sure and let us know if you have a spark or not by doing the test that I mentioned we'll go from there!:2thumbs:

Thanks all for the reply,Raywood, good thought but ive been there at least a hundred times, put a new battery in it five times in a year(2 melted in the bike) and use a tender, new batt in it now. I did get the coil unbolted and its cracked across the bottom but i think its just the casing. getting 12.7 at yellow anyway. Hoping to get home early tomorrow and try Dogvet's suggestion, seems somebody had trouble long before me, alot of fasteners not in plain sight are half stripped out. alot to be said for right tools for the job.

Hey DOGVET

Dogvet,
no red light on my module, tore apart some wiring and found 2 broken wires at my dash, just blinker and high beam, was going to call vickie and try to get a new harness but after seeing the posts on KC thats not goin to work. im headin out right now to short green to black on the module. im not too good with electric shit so im hoping i dont fry anything. Who next to call for parts? cause if i can force spark then i need a new plate right? I might have to try dennis kirk. there is a custom hawg dealer here that will get parts but i stopped in the other day to see if they had any ideas of what it could be and you would of thought i rode in there on a vespa. nobody i want to give my money to.pricks. Glad theres still a friendly helping hand or two on the comp

ok, fixed my dash wires for blinker, damn small. got ready to short black to green, turned the key on and red lite came on at module!? havent seen that in awhile. tried the key a few times , sometimes the light would come on an sometimes not. still no flash when turnin over. shorted the wires (gr+bl) no spark.. so i have a bad module or coil?:bang: :bang: :bang:

long story but i had the same problem with 00' husk. Let my bro use the bike and the battery had issues so he bought a new one and hooked the leads up backwards, ouch. Anyways to my point,it would turn over fine, everything worked great, except it wouldn't fire. Checked spark and nothing. i brought it in to the "stealer" and it ended up being the cam sensor, relitively inexpensive, i think it $100 or so. I don't have my service manual with so i don't know how to test it. But looks like dogvet had some good stuff to check. just throwing it out there. Sorry to here about all the downtime bro.

thanks beast, ill check that out too. I think im getting close. just dont have the extra money for parts to throw at it that it dont need. would the cam sensor test okay if the ign mod or coil were bad?

ok, i tore half the wiring out of the bike, fixed a few connections that were unsure, i think ive tested every wire 3 times. grounded the green an black at the module, this time i have spark at the plugs ,plugged it back in but still no spark when turnin over so im going to try to find someone who has a sensor plate and try that.

Keep at it Hunter!!! :2thumbs: Going over all the wiring will be good in the long run and help prevent further problems.

Had some of the same shit with my bike (2001 pro street) Turns out most of it was the switch and the coil. Took my coil off and put it on a buddys Harley and it worked but it would not fire on the dog. I bought two Drag Spec.coils last year and they both went out or broke. I started riding with a spare coil in the tool bag--HA HA. I bought the Accel coil and wires and made a strap that wraps under the coil to help support it. Things have been much better since then. I could have put her in the shop but the more I ride her the more I work on her and the more I know about her.
It's like my wife said--"If you wanted comfortable, reliable and cheap you should be riding the honda. You had to have this pretty bitch so deal with it"

Hunter, check the oil puking threads. They can be cause by a number of things. Check your oil level and make sure your tank is not overfilled. Second would be to check your ball valve, that it's not stuck or have dirt from laying around. Check your screen also. Most times the blowby comes from the crank case vent and not the heads. If that is the case just get a puke can and it'll solve your problem. Don't give up on these dogs. They are a lot of fun once you fix all the kinks.
