no oil flow

I was riding the dog the other day when I started hearing top end noise and got the low oil pressure light. Checked the oil level and the tappet screen which were both good. removed the oil filter and started the bike. No oil flow at all. Drained the oil and got about 3.5 quarts out. blew through the oil lines and all were clear. Only thing I can think of is the oil pump is out. Removed the cover off oil pump and the cam cover.

Should the gears in the oil pump spin freely? a little drag but not much.
When I turned the oil pump gears oil was pumping into cam area, not much just a few ounces which I think it should.

Everything looks good to me guys. Im at a loss. Any advice?

If you are able to turn the oil pump gears by not rotating the engine, then there is either a broken gear in the oil pump, broken drive gear, or broken keyway. Best case scenario, the snap ring that holds the drive gear on the oil pump shaft fell off and it is laying in the bottom of the cam compartment...along with the keyway. Turn the gears while looking at the oil pump drive gear inside the cam compartment. See if the oil pump shaft is moving, and the gear is not.

If you only removed the cover off the oil pump and the gears turn without turning the engine, then more than likely you sheared the key on the gear. Was there any damage to the gears? I just had a similar problem, but the gear that sheared a key was the scavenger gear on the front side of the pump (you would have to completely remove the pump to see these gears). You will have to remove the pump in order to replace the key in the gear on the back side of the pump. That's the easy part! What you need to be looking for is what caused the gear to shear the key. Did you see anything foreign when you removed the cover from the oil pump?
