I don't know if this wll ever help anyone in future but you never know.
I've recently had no brake lights with either the front or rear brake - thought it had to be connected because it would be odd to get a fault with both, totally unconnected, at pretty much the same time. I was wrong.
My first thoughts were the front brake switch in the hand control as I know they can be a bit delicate. I bought a banjo bolt switch as I thought I would change it anyway to a probably better system and it only cost me $18. I cut the wires to the switch, touched them together and had brake lights. Drained the brake fluid, put the banjo switch in the front caliper, hard wired / soldered the connections and voila - brake lights!
Still no lights with the rear brake though. Bummer. My first thought was the connector from the wiring to the lights themselves to the harness but then I thought if that was iffy then the brkae lights wouldn't work from the front switch either. So I found the connector connecting the wires from the banjo switch on the rear caliper to the harness and this was a bit messed up - didn't look the best. I pulled it apart, put my voltmeter into it and the pin from the VM must have touched both pins in the connector at the same time because the brake lights came on. Problem found. It had to either be the connector or the switch on the rear caliper. I didn't have another switch so I just cut the connector out as it didn't look good anyway and hard wired /soldered it. Now I have brake lights again with both brakes. Job done.
