No Baffles / Cracked Valves?

I'm only a modest wrench but I always try to learn more. I ask this to get opinions from people in the know or anyone else for that matter.

If you run short pipes with out baffles will it crack or snap a valve in very cold weather?

I have seen some custom pipes in different places that are real short I'm sure you have too.
