News from my big dog tech

So I just dropped my 05 dog off for a tire and once over. My local big dog tech was an authorized big dog warranty center and is a top level s&s dealer.
He was telling me I need to get rid of my rocker boxes before I break a valve, and while I'm at it to have the heads milled to get rid of the emissions stuff to give my bike more power, this would also involve a new carb, as I have the g carb which is for the lower HP 117.
That's what he had to say. About $3000 if I have him do it all.
I searched the forum and found some info about issues with tp rocker boxes but nothing saying that it will destroy my engine if left alone.
What do you guys say?

There are a lot of post on here about the rocker boxes. Some guys love them some hate them. As far as the head milling I would wait till rebuild time. Why tear down a perfectly good motor? How much power do you need? I am confused about the carb. I thought the G was the non emission carb and the E was for the emission motors. If he takes a G off what is he going to put on?

Pull your rocker covers, rocker mounts and look at the top of valve stems. If you see a nice clean wear line that is straight and in the center of the stem then run screaming from that shop. If you see some weird wear like off center of the stem or worse a figure eight looking wear pattern then you definitely need to look at changing to the S&S top end. As far as milling heads and bigger carb etc etc just remember this once you start to Tinker you may end up with just that a Tinker Toy.
As far as the G carb??? For the lower HP 117??? The G Carb is the bigger carb. Yes you can go to their modified Black series G carb or have it modified by Triple X or even go to a Mikuni or some other shit like that but here are the real questions. Do you like riding your bike? Are you happy with it now and do you really need or want that extra power? There are some really good motor guys out there, John Sachs, but there are also tons of people who don't know what their doing so you really have to be super careful.

You guys are right. I meant e carb. He hasn't looked at the bike or the engine. As soon as I got there he was telling me that the early 117 made less HP than a 107. I am perfectly happy with how it is now. I didn't ask about adding more power, he suggested that those tp boxes will fail and I need to think about upgrading if I plan to keep it. Once he got on the subject he said, if your going to do that go ahead do the heads and carb. I do not want to spend $3000 just for power I want my bike to be reliable that is all. I plan to put 10,000 miles on it next year. I told him for now just do the tire and oil change. I wanted to hear what you guys s said. He told me to research it and even to call S&S and they would agree.

Franco's pics tell the tale.
If you have stuff like that going on you need to change to S&S.
Based on your last post. Check the Valve stems if they look anything like Franco's pics then change your rocker boxes but leave everything else ALONE.
And, just a suggestion, but I would find another shop to my baby to.

Do you know which rocker boxes you have for sure? How many bolts are in the top of them? If you are happy with it and it runs good leave it alone.

I have about 45k on my TP boxes, however they did replace the head back when it was in warranty with new one due to the valve guides were at the limits. From the info I got the replaced the rockers with S&S, changed the springs, etc but kept the TP rocker boxes. Since then about 30k and close to 45k all to together.

They also changed to a 600 cam while they had it done.

So far runs good, no odds sounds and no issue.

Thanks Kapt. But BDM is taking my money with other various issues. So, six of one or half dozen of the other.

I will have to pull them and take a look. I do not like the idea of replacing things that are not broken, But I also have a few big trips to go on next year, so I don't want any issues that could be prevented.

Re-read the original post. He is talking about his rocker box covers. You know the shiny things on the very top of the motor.

30,000 miles on my TP Rockers and still ticking along. If I ever get the money I'll change them out. I've been saying this for 7 years now.
