New member with tuning issues...

Hi folks,

After years (and I mean yeeeeears) of HD ownership I have finally taken the plunge and became the proud owner of a 2004 bulldog, amazing bike!

I am one of the few european owners, bought it used in the UK (weak pound sterling) and drove it straight back to Belgium thru the channel tunnel ('bout 500 clicks)

The bike has been pretty reliable apart from a few electrical issues (horn getting stuck on etc..) but I would like your opinion on a little annoying issue...

I live in a big city and often use the bike for small trips, now tell me if I am wrong, but I have the feeling it takes ages to warm up...

When it is cold it missfires badly when I open the throttle more than 1/3rd, and it takes more than 15 clicks to get warm and thus work properly which is pretty annoying cause most of my trips are less than that...

I changed the plugs, did'nt make a difference...

I have a feeling it might run a little bit too rich cause of the smell but other than that no particular symptoms of what might cause the long warmup...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance...

Don't use the choke unless you absolutely have to. If you use it make sure to turn it off as soon as it starts and warm it up with the throttle.

Do a search in the HOW TO SECTION. Gasman posted a how to on carb adjustment. It's most likely what you need. Like the others stated don't used the enrichner unless you really have to. The bike usually take about 5 minutes or so to warm up. I usually start it up and by the time I get my gear on it's good to go.

I usually let it warm up till I can feel that the front head is warm to the touch. I just put the friction lock on let it run around 1500 rpm and walk away. Always checking on it to make sure it doesn't "walk away" on the kick-stand. And then obvously will take a bit longer to warm up in the colder months. Untill it drops down to below 50 degrees I won't have to use the enrichener....just a few quick rolls on the gas and she comes alive.
