New Mastiff owner needs advice

Finally bit the bullet and bought my first Big Dog .Got it home today,and want some advice from some of you experinced owners. Its a 07 Mastiff and it has 804 miles. The previous owner said he had`nt long had the 500 mile service done. Other than needing a good clean-up, only thing I see the bike needs is it was missing a rear taillight lens. Is there any special way these are installed. Also is this bike still in a break-in period. Also know all these bikes have the six-speed trans. Never owned a bike with this trans.,should 6th gear be only used for open highway riding.Also had a dealer once tell me to run the rpm`s up to at least 2500 before changing gears, said not to let it lug down. Just want some good solid everyday tips,just hope I dont have some of the problems listed on the forums. Where would be a good place to pick up a lens,I live in Va., dont have a local BD dealer.

sounds like you've got just about everything right, especially the part about lugging it. should be able to pick the lenses up at a H-D dealer.

Yeah or order a bigdog lens from a bigdog dealer and get normal shipping as expensive as Harly is,You might save some money if your not in a hurry...

Welcome Topgun, download the owners manual at the BDM website and it will tell you all about the transmission and other things.

Just keep your bike on a battery tender and learn to start it without using that enrichener and you'll have a lot of fun with it.

Yes you are still well within the breakin period, I really didn't notice a change til I hit about 1200 miles; thats when she started to want too growl. Just take your time getting used to the turn radius, and always safety first. Don't be afraid to play with it with tools; she likes that.:2thumbs:
