New EHC choice?

I've got an '08 Ridgeback, had a problem so I had the EHC tested and it looks like I have to replace it. I'm trying to make the decision between what looks like 3 real choices and could use some feedback. Choices are the EHC RIP from BDM or The German EHC from Wild Steed Works.. Any advice guys?

:agree: Go with axels ehc it's the easiest to install and the cheapest price also has the best warranty 2 years I believe donna and Derek are selling them now on eBay I've got over 3000 miles on the one I bought from axel I was very impressed with the quality that I sold my original ehc and bought a second one from Axel to keep as a spare , with the other units you have hours of work, rewire pulling tank etc but with axels it only takes about 15 minutes:old2::chopper:
1+ If that's the way you are going to go then keep it simple and Curtis will back it up and have fast shipping.

I went with Axel's unit. Was easy to install. Just drill one hole, that's it!! I like the program features too. Priced (less) right and like others mentioned, two year warranty. Hard to beat!! I see only one disadvantage, Axel's unit does not add any moisture protection over the stock configuration. In my case, I'm a sunny day rider and don't plan on getting wet. My original EHC was fine, I just always worried it would leave me stranded. I can also tell you there is very little battery drain with this unit. The factory EHC required the battery to be on a tender quite a bit. If you have a compromised rear harness, you may want to consider the RIP from what I saw they came with the rear harness. My 2 cents!!!

Replaced with a doc unit on my 2008 Ridgeback and required major modification of battery tray.

Would you like to share the details? This is a 1st time I've heard of this
:agree: The ESC mounts in the same location as stock EHC. My mastiff had the PDM installed by BDM dealer quite a while back and they did a shit job, spliced wires were constantly coming loose, never mind the damn rats nest of wires that looked like shit. I did decide to put the ESC under the battery tray, so I drilled a couple holes..don't consider that a major modification..
About 6k miles on the ESC without an issue, Ker and cdoggy also have the ESC, and have not heard any problems from them.:old2:

I installed docs esc in my 04 bulldog, it was around $800 all together, it came with a built in charging indicator, upgraded ceramic headlight plug and the complete harness all shrink wrapped and put together very nicely, I didn't have to modify anything on the bike to install it, the unit fits perfectly under the seat and even used the same mounting holes the ehc used. (According to Jeff you shouldn't have to modify anything to make his unit fit if you do it right)I am very happy with this upgrade, it's been over a year now and I haven't had the slightest hiccup with his unit. I don't use my battery tender anymore either, it holds the charge for two weeks just fine and fires right up every time no matter what. no tender or jump box needed anymore. The install is straight forward. His wires are all labeled and comes with all the directions you'll need to install it, you really can't mess it up, it took me about 6 hours from start to finish. The hardest part is pulling the harness through the backbone but thats not too bad with a little patience and an extra hand to help you. Jeff even made me a little pigtail connector to use with my tractor supply key switch since my oe big dog switch took a crap years ago. I had a couple questions during the install and he answered the phone on the first call and talked me through everything I needed to know and helped me figure out an issue I had with my pcb board. In the 13-14 months or so it's been in the bike it's gotten plenty of abuse between the Florida heat and rain during the summer and it's never had an issue, the charging light works great too, the oil light on the speedo does double duty so it will come on when there's a charging or battery issue which imo is worth the extra $. I added a couple pics of the unit from when I put it in 1F318BD9-27A0-4B3E-86CA-9F540505E507.JPGthe backbone part of the harness came put together and taped at the end so you can slide it right through easier 5419D93C-B046-4417-8F42-DDA56E5675BC.JPGCA3F9A8A-868E-4344-AC8F-17443A216E63.JPG this pic was during the install and almost all set up. I've since removed the thunder heart ignition and replaced it with a nose cone style ignition so the silver box is gone and I added the fuse upgrade for the VR. Never had an issue since upgrading from my wires plus. This was probably the best investment I've put into this bike so far. Hope this helps. I've got a few more pics of the wire harness being put together when the tank was off if anyone wants to see
Edit* I've put about 10k miles on the bike since installing the esc

That battery was in the bike when I got it, with no battery strap, both terminals beat up and half melted, and was hooked up to a wires plus unit that would get so hot after about 20 mins of riding, it would literally melt the WP module and start smoking from under the seat of the bike, & batt terminals would get so hot they'd start to melt, after going through two modules @ 200 something dollars, and a lot of frustration, troubleshooting, drinking, and swearing, I decided to replace it all with docs esc, which to me was the best choice & ive been riding problem free since. I've actually got that beat up battery in my 01 pro sport that's still using the ehc and it works just fine lmao I can't bring myself to toss a good working battery as ragged as she is

When I installed the DOC unit. it fit into the spot the old unit was in, but sat too high for the seat to be installed. I called Jeff about the issue, and he explained to me that every Big Dog Motorcycle is custom and hand made. "Therefore there may be some modification needed to install on some units". Unfortunately mine was one of them....luckily I am an auto mechanic with welding capabilities, and have a shop, or this would have been very expensive. Not an easy fix, but I believe this kit is the best fix for the problem! No spliced connections and have not had a problem after one year and 2000 miles.

6,000 tender free miles! Have not used it since I installed the ESC, I would HIGHLY recommend DOC's unit.:old2::old2::old2::old2::old2::old2::old2::old2:

'09 Ridgeback with the DOC's ESC.... Yeah, the Ridgeback battery tray sits high so I decided to cut a relief into the seat pan to make room for the main connector. I then went to Hobby Lobby and got some spray on glue and material so it all looks nice. No issues but I do not ride nearly as much as I used to so I probably only have close to 2k miles on the ESC.

Here's the deal why take on more work if you don't have to, many members made 10s of thousands of miles or more on the original ehc. Get axles unit and be done in 15 minutes why go through hours of unnecessary wiring when it's not needed, I've heard of issues with both docs unit as well as the rip so none are perfect easier in this case is best, a bonus with Axel you get 2 year warranty not 30 or 60 days.
I did not have the option to go with Axel's as I already had the PDM installed so needed new wiring harness. if I still had my original EHC I would have most likely gone with Axel's unit.:old2:

On my second docs unit on my second big dog and wouldn't get anything else. It's hand made to fit the specific bike. Battery charging monitoring system. Runs my air ride suspension. A true plug in play system. No splicing at all. Waterproof and worth every minute and penny took to install it. Any problem and Jeff who makes it walks you thru any issue till it's taken care of. Great product and great live support from docs.
