New Cam!!!!

Just had an S&S 640 cam installed in my 07 K9, That is the best $$ I've spent on this bike!! It blew me away how much more power it has & the sound is wicked!!! Cam & rejetted carb. Now THIS is the way this dog should run!!

got that also.

now bump the compression to at least 10.8-1 and hold on!
Marv,
if going that route, would 'some one' need to get an adjustable ignition to keep it from pinging?

My bike is running great but you never now!:D

if highest octane gas is used and still get detonation the options are to lower comp or retard ignition. IMO

i have mine set at 28 degrees at full advanced (3K rpm's)

with the 640 cam it really pulls hard into high rpm's. so with a good valve train, jim's rollers, travel limiters, triple wound springs set for the cam, i'm comfortable raising the limiter to 6500 using the dynatek 2KI ignition

Marv, Can't you also put in a colder plug??

Did you have anything else done to the engine?

Gas, from most of my race car days, if you can hear the detonation, its more than a plug. You can tweak with colder plugs and indexing mostly on a dyno.

Yeah I should specifiy "on a dyno". I know that when working on EFI in cars on a dyno we (my bud an engine builder) would swap out plugs for help with timing.

not sure how swapping out plugs is gonna help timing?

a colder plug supposedly dissipates more heat. thats why i run them with the high compression.

On the dyno, you would want to advance the timing more, but with the gas pump 93 octane the motor would start to ping. You change out the plug to a different temp so that it changes the temp of fire. Some shit like that, I use to help my bud wrench on his car before he moved and he was constantly playing with spark plug temps to aid with timing and detonation.

Called my bud

as you increase the timing you increase to get more hp, however, the combution temps which can cause pinging. You install the colder plug to aid in pulling out some of that higher temp. However, by lowering the comb temp you could robbing hp and lowering exhaust gases temps which can cause the exhaust to move slower which also hurts power. Its a balence thing, and something to aid with more some pinging but not so much with the further extreme of spark plug knock.

I could get more info on the topic but that should cliff notes it well. Didn't get too deep with it. The guy works tech for Arvin Meritor & Dart Cyclinder Heads (married to the co-owner of Dart).

A quick google search also can confirm some of what I am repeating

I'm no pro, I asked a simple question. However, maybe some of the others can learn from this as I believe I have provide enough info in this "tech topic" for some educational value.
