Nevada riders I need some help/info.

Heading to the Laughlin River run, And we will be riding in Nevada. I do not have DOT helmet. But I do have a non DOT polo helmet. Small and fits the head (for the most part). Will I have any problems with the cops? We might end up riding down the strip in Vegas.
thanks

50 State Helmet Law Review

looking at it closer, that site is quite a few years old and seems like there is some confusion.

Federal Standard 218

*

Standard 218 of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards governs the manufacture, testing and labeling of motorcycle helmets in the United States, and is adopted by reference in the Nevada motorcycle helmet law. This standard requires testing of a motorcycle helmet to ensure that it can withstand penetration and that the chinstrap will remain in place upon impact. The standard also puts in place a labeling system so that helmets meeting Standard 218 requirements can be identified.

Nevada Revised Statute 486.231 and 486.381

*

Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 486.231 requires drivers and passengers of motorcycles to wear "protective headgear." NRS 486.381 states that violations of NRS 486.231 requiring protective headgear is a misdemeanor.

Nevada Attorney General Opinion No. 2002-41

*

Opinion 2002-41 was issued by the Nevada attorney general to the chief of the Nevada Highway Patrol to assist highway patrol officers and members of the public to identify motorcycle helmets that meet Nevada law. The opinion states that the presence of a "DOT sticker," or of a sticker from Snell Memorial Foundation or American National Standards Institute, is a reliable indicator that a helmet conforms with Nevada standards. The opinion further indicates that, if one of the aforementioned labels is not present, the highway patrol must contact the helmet manufacturer or the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration to definitively determine whether the helmet meets Nevada law.

I was looking at that web site, already. To many laws to understand, or attempt to read.
I am thinking about just putting a DOT sticker on the back of my helmet, just to make life easy. Can anyone give me measurements of a DOT sticker on the back of the helmet, and if you can post a picture, that would be great. And I will have my wife make one on her scrap book machine..

I have been to Laughlin many times over the years, no problems with wearing a novelty helmet with no dot sticker. Even in Vegas.

I lived in Vegas for a short time 20yrs ago. I didnt wear a DOT helmet, was never hassled, or ticketed....& I was a young punk then :)

Granted, Im sure plenty of laws have been added since but, DOT helmets were still a requirement at the time.

There is no standard for the "DOT" markings, you can make one any size of form factor you want. 99% of the cops could care less unless they have road blocks or you have no helmet at all.

I remember one stop where a bonehead said, "thanks for no hassle on the helmets" (he had a beenie on) and the cop said, "I don't care if you have a chicken strapped to your head so long as you have something I can call a helmet -- now get out of here!"
