missing and cut out problem

:flag:Why not put a spark tester on the plug wire with the cylinder that is cutting out and watch it when the cylinder cuts out to see if it is indeed an electrical problem. A noid light will tell you if the injectors are firing. If your bike is an efi bike it could be the vfi module as this controls all ignition functions. My bike had a problem with shutting down which was the vfi module. I would also lose fuel pump and a few other functions controled by the module. Have you checked the temp sensor on the head to see if its sending the bike into skip fire mode? Hope this helps. Good luck !:2thumbs:

Love email. I cut and paste all your suggestions and re-send them to the mech. We should have some type of idea today. Thank You everyone!!

I don't know if someone has suggested this but sometimes coils quit when they get hot. They work fine when cold but crap out when hot. Just a thought.

I had that problem on a 04 pitbull I had in my shop. It ended up being a bad thunder heart ignition. What year, model are you working on?

I would have said bad coil or ignition module but you wouldn't get a drained battery from that. So it could be that AND you gotta have a loose or pinched wire somewhere. Possibly running to the coil/ignition.

I've never seen a Big Dog bagger in person so I'm not sure but I imagine it's like the rest of ours and theres a HUGE harness under the tank. I would pull the tank and start testing wires, and ensuring everything is 100% sealed. Doesn't take much to rub one of those 22 AWG wires bare.

Might be worthwhile to have the ignition module and coil tested as well, although I would think your mechanic should have already done that?

And no offense not to knock the shop but 2 months and they can't figure it out? They could have rebuilt the whole damn thing by now....

you say your battery is draining down over night, remove what you have to, to get to all wiring ( tank etc. ) and then start checking what is still drawing power with key off. this will put in the the area of the problem - if battery is drained something has to be doing it. when you find what is drain your battery have that part checked or place it and recheck and make sure the drain is gone. electrical problems can be hard to find - start with basics like I listed above.

Here I am! Back in action boy's! Definitely 12 weeks is a long time. All started with a small oil leak running in/out of the cooler. The braided steel lines didn't have a separator so the vibration slowly frayed a small hole in one line. After that, the bolts on the cam cover where cracked again (5 out of 6). Needless to say, a new 640 S&S cam was installed because the old one went flat and a new cam bearing installed. From there, We had ignition issues on the front and rear cylinders. A new ignition and plug wire's fixed that. From there, a constant drain on the battery developed. The fairing came off and the culprit was my power antenna being plugged into a constant charge after an exhausting search to nail it down.. After all this, the bike couldn't be programmed with a new map so S&S remotely logged into my bike via internet and tried to diagnose the problem. They eventually figured out that their vfi unit wasn't working correctly so we got a new one of those too @ a discounted priced ...I rode the bike this last Friday/Saturday and Sunday and have to admit, time and effort pays off. Bike runs like a bat out of hell and I'm one happy camper! Thank You to all for your help and input to everyone on this forum!
