I've been reading this site for the last couple weeks, since I got my 03 chopper, and it is a great source of information. Maybe too good, cause now my poor old head hurts, and I still am not sure about some things. I have a charging problem, the stator is putting out around 20 volts a/c at idle, battery is 12.5 volts, regardless of rpm. Need a regulator. But what regulator? Any advice? Seems the most problems I have read about with Big Dogs are electrical, would it be any advantage to replace the entire charging system with something better? I like to fix something once, not chase ghosts trying to save a nickle. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

I just did a vr replacement on chopper daves bike in the fall. There is a thread around here somewhere tt stated a bunch of the numbers u need to use to check on the problem. Search it, thread started by me. I will do the search when on a pc not my phone. But u need to test the stator seperately to determine which component is actually defunked.

Found it. With my phone. Tt alone deserves somin.
Anyway. Different problem but checks should be the same. Do what I did with daves bike. Report bk the results.

I guess my question is, I read on one thread that the regulator should be a series type, and when I was looking on the online catologues they were showing some that dumped excess to ground, and some that controlled the stator output. Don't want to put on something on that will take out the stator at an inopportune time.
Thanks for the reply. Gas Man, I checked the v/r ground, and the stator is putting out, I am not sure what regulator I need to order to fix me up. I understand the original on a 2003 is 32 amp, but I am not sure what type is correct. I am probably overthinking this, but I make a living troubleshooting industrial machinery, and don't like to make a decision without all the info I can get.
So you determined it IS for sure the regulator?

Sorry it took me so long to reply, been putting in a lot of hours at work, and haven't had much spare time to work on the Dog. I went back and checked the stator output again, and it stays around 20 volts, regardless of rpm. This bike has been worked on some, as any 7 year old bike would require, and I don't have a clue who did the work or what parts were used, BD or whatever they could find. I am in this bike for the long haul, and believe in fixing things once. So I am going to replace the entire charging system with a Spykes 32 amp and not worry about it anymore. Hopefully I will get some time off next week, and can get this done. Thanks Gas Man for the links, that is what made me check again.
