I was cleaning the top of the rocker boxs with a rag and noticed the rubber cover came off in the center of the head. So i reached my finger down in and felt something loose. So I pulled it out and it was the black thing with the spring on it. What is it and should I be worried?

Yep, sounds like one of the compression releases broke. Many threads here on them. You will need a special S&S tool to remove and replace the release.

I can get a pic later tonight when i get home. Its a black piece. has a spring around it. Flat head screw driver top. Looks like it also has a retaining clip above the spring.

I need a little help here.. My rear release just broke, and I'm wondering what all do I have to take apart to replace it? And where can I get that tool that is needed?
Thanks

Don't start the engine now because the lower portion of the compression release could fall down inside the cylinder if it hasn't already. It's like replacing a spark plug.
