Ok, I bought a 2004 Bulldog about 5 months ago and she ran fine. Shiftted great with no clatter or banging. I - like a dumb ass - wanted to take a little slack out of the cable. I adjusted it a little and then I started having problems like not going into nuetral. I even had the green ligh come on it was still in gear.

I took my bike to a local shop for adjustment. They told be everything was fine with the bike and adjusted teh cable.

Heres the part I'm confused on. They said they needed to take the outer primary off and inspect the basket (Isn't that what the inspection cover is for?). They also told me that they used the old gasket

To add insult to injury, I had them look for a leak on the primary when I dropped the bike off and they told me I need a gasket for $80 bucks. I originally declined and said I would di it at a later date so they dropped the price down to $48 so I went with with it. I didn't know they were going to tell me they took off the primary at this time.

Can someone help me. Do you or don't you need to take the primary off to get to the clutch?

yep it must come off for the clutch inspection.. 80 bucks for a gasket.. wtf... the inspection cover will come off but you cant see the basket very well to inspect properly.. you dont adjust the clutch with the cable only cable slack.. do a search...

Impatient? 3 minutes after posting!!! :D

Of course the cover has to come off to inspect the clutch properly. You have a regular HD style primary cover. Go get a new gasket set for it and do it.

The inspection cover is for checking chain tension and adding oil.

If you dont know how to do any of this maintenace to your bike its in your best interest to find mechanics you can trust, which seemed these guys were right on the money with their prognosis....also if you are going to second guess those that are trying to take care of your bike for you again it will be in your best interest to purchase a shop manual and start reading about your bike, and start doing the smaller things to it yourself,,,,,,
