Howdy all, Just put new oil lines on the bike with also a synthetic oil change. I primed the oil line's with the plug wires off 3 times for about 20 seconds each time. I just installed the new K&P oil filter from this site. I drove around for about 20 minutes with no problems then at a light my oil light came on. when I rev it it goes off. Brought it home and took the oil cap off and measured about 1/2 inch up a screwdriver.I think it's suppose to be only a 1/4 inch. I started it up and see the oil bubbleing in the bottom of the stem. So I started it up with the cap off and the light stays off , as soon as I put the cap back on and screw it in the light comes back on. Take it off and the light goes off.My idle is at 1000 rpm. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,Cliff

Clean your tappet screen. If that doesn't work check for ground on orange wire under tank

What is your idle RPM set to, 1000? . If it's too low the light will come on. Set it just above 1000 RPMs like 1050 at idle...

I drew a diagram for the oil lines and they are on correct. My Idle is at 1000,I will try to get it to 1050 and clean out the tappet screen tonight. Raywood, I know you are a great brain for these bikes,if my ground was bad would the oil light only come on at idle? Is a good way to check my pressure to hook up my scavenger and fire her up? If oil comes out does that mean everything is fine except for maybe a idle adjustment.

Thanks for your help.

Yeah, if the wire was grounded it would be on all the time. I would verify idle rpm and after cleaning the tappet screen see what its doing.

You don't by chance have the restrictive KN 171 oil filter on it

Ray, I will call you after work (4:00pm central) if that's ok with you just to pick your brain before I dive back into the scoot to troubleshoot. Thanks for what you do for us.

update

Ok I installed my Oil Pressure gauge from WSW I have 25 to 30 pounds at start up and idle during warming the bike up. So my oil should be going through my lines fine. The light did come on a few times when I came to a stop. I still have to check the wiring under the tank to make sure the orange wire is not grounding to the bike. Thanks Ray and WSW for the fast delivery of my gauge set up. Also should say I hear no starnge noises coming from motor.

Thanks,
Cliff

Bearman I'm using Mobil 1 20-50 synthetic, Firedog, My dumbass forgot to look down and check that out. It should read about 5lbs correct? Hopefully it will warm up again,I shall look down next time.
Thanks

That's good oil, so if your oil sending unit isn't bad, then it sounds like the new filter doesn't have enough restriction at ilde to keep the oil pressure up (that's a good thing).
The bad thing is that the bearings aren't providing enough restriction either, meaning you got some wear on the motor.

If your oil sending unit is good, and your pressure is good when cold but falls off too much when warm (or hot), you might want to go with a straight 40 weight oil and see how that does when she's all warmed up. And then start saving up for the rebuild.

But before switching to heavier oil, do the pushrod adjustment to see if it helps any with the oil pressure when warm.

Your 05 has the HP oil pump so even at idle you should have 10 lbs or so after its warmed up. 30 lbs when riding down the road.
First year I had mine my oil light would come on and then go out especially after crossing bridges and bumps. Turned out to be a chaffed wire under the tank. I added the oil pressure gauge for piece of mind.

Firedog, Im going to have to wait for a warmer day to check for that one. My dumbass didn't think to look down at my new oil pressure gauge. It's suppose to be crappy here (Illinois) for awhile.
