I bought a sportster 72. I think it will be fun to play with. I have a cvo Roadking, a heritage, & a 08 softtail custom for the longer rides. That is why the BD did,not get ridden much. I have had absolutely no problems with the harleys. My wife rides a 2011 XXX trike. I,ve been a mechanic for about 43 years. I really enjoy making the bikes my own but I really don,t care to fix something anymore that was poorly engineered.
I disagree with you on maintained properly. I believe it's the luck of the draw. You and a few others don't have any issues. I maintain my bike and EHC. It crapped out. That's not the life of the bike NOR was it because it was poorly maintained. Maintenance had nothing to do with MY EHC. I hope all your EHC's last the life of you bike. Time will tell the story.I do believe if the ehc is maintained properly it can last the life of the bike with that being said there are a couple of great alternatives out there and only seem to take a few hours for even a novice to install just my 2 cents
I was told they put millions into R&D for the EHC,EHC is poorly engineered. .
You were the one that mentioned "pulling the gas tank" not me. I never pull mine. I have owned 4 Big Dogs since 2005,with EHC's collectively have ridden them over 130,000 miles never had a problem with the EHC. The Skoggdog has 65,000 miles on his 08 K 9 and he has never had a problem with his EHC. In total these bikes have gone nearly 200,000 miles with ZERO EHC problems It is what it is.My EHC brain is under the seat just like yours, and you know it. No need to be a smart ass. Yes, I did the bull shit clean from the mother brain each year till if farted out finally. Takes me longer than 10 minutes but I'm old & stupid. No it's not a big deal just the clean that portion of the EHC. But that's .25 of the actual job for electrical problems. Now I do have some experience begin broken down on the side of the highway because my EHC and electrical system didn't work. Oh but you cleaned yours and never had a problem (great for you but not-so-hot-so for me).
I spent hundreds of hours and lots of money troubleshooting the issues cause I listened to folks on this forum that "know better" to no resolution what-so-ever! That was a big fat waist of time and money. I did eventually listen to a few kind hearted members that told me early on to change it out but I was pig headed and well did like most others tried to isolate the issue but again didn't work for me. In hindsight I didn't need a new battery, starter, regulator, ignition, or any other part I replaced. I needed an electrical system that actually works with a brain that doesn't fart or need warmed up cause it a bit chilly outside. So if your motorcycle is a BDM and your horn is sounding for no reason, while your four-ways are a flashing, or you bright lights are on without turning them on, all while your bike won't crank, then all of sudden it starts up then shuts down, but all this disappears only when the EHC is "warmed" then I offer to my experience, before they break down on the side of the road like I did, my opinion and you should replace the EHC and wiring harness! Just sayin..
Yep, pulled the gas tank.. Because you have to check the JST connections to the wiring harness. Oh, my bad, only I had to do that. My mistake for mentioning having pull the gas tank to make sure all the JST connections are clean and tight. You were the one that mentioned "pulling the gas tank" not me. I never pull mine. Interesting Perk thanks. Not for anything but if my motorcycle is going down the road and all of a sudden dies, I might think that would be a safety issue. But again I'm just another stupid consumer..Through my experience the further they go with technology ,especially electronics the worse it gets. It isn,t just big dog. We see the Dodge tipm modules fail all the time, the Ford icp modules constantly failing, Gm pcm,s fail. These are not inexpensive parts to replace. They never recall any of these because they are not a safety issue. They only hope you are out of the warranty period & then it,s your problem. They need to start perfecting this crap before putting it into production. Let's get back to a little quality control.
Now your just stirring it up but I'm game. Money well spent according some BDB members who between friends have over 200k on there EHC BDM's with no problem. I'm wondering if BDM kept statistics on how many EHC's failed from all the BDM's produced and what that number looks like? It's was the owner's fault that didn't take care of their EHC according to manufactures specified maintenance requirements.I was told they put millions into R&D for the EHC,And you wonder why they went under

Happy your EHC has lasted forever. Your right everyone else who has EHC problems it's their fault. It's not the EHC.. They are perfectly engineered electrical harnesses.
My EHC is eleven (11) years old and it has NEVER failed......I totally agree EHC is total crap. Surprised there wasn,t a lawsuit before BD went tits up. But anyway, I was going to do away with ehc this winter but dam snowstorms kept me too busy to do anything else. I found a bike this spring that I liked (yes an HD) & decided to just get rid of the big dog rather than to rewire. May regret it but it is a done deal.
You can beleive that, but it doesn't make it true. It will last the life of the bike, if you ride like MOST BigDog riders.... 100 or 1000 miles a year (look at all the BD for sale, they all have extremely low miles). Mine went out at about 54,000 miles or so, and was acting up before that. It was explained to me by Matt from KMW that the cause was due the large connector vibrating and making microfractures in the motherboard of the computer. That is why the connector was changed by KMW... there were simply to many G's of vibration on the connector due to being a solid mount engine and the large connector....I do believe if the ehc is maintained properly it can last the life of the bike with that being said there are a couple of great alternatives out there and only seem to take a few hours for even a novice to install just my 2 cents
Need to start following your words on other items like wheels and tires and necks..lol"Clean & Tight"

Just my .02
Wish mine lasted that long... but, as with anything, different units last different amounts of time for each person. Hell, I had a compression release valve blow out the top in the first year. But then again, my original battery lasted nearly 4 years of daily riding.78,00 miles in 9 years no problems yet
Yea I have a SuperMax it has about 40,000 on it and it still looks like new! I'm sure it will outlast me!Wish mine lasted that long... but, as with anything, different units last different amounts of time for each person. Just changed my rear rocker box gasket at 59,000. Now at 60k looks like I need to change the cylinder base gasket...
Oh, yeah.... on my 3rd pulley too. (This one I had SuperMaxed) Seems they last me about 20 - 22,000/pulley.
