Riding yesterday and the bike kept dying to a slow down then backfiring at about 30mph then would go again then eventually would die and leave me on the side of the road. Start up about 15 minutes later and would get to ride about 5 miles and start all over again it took me 45 minutes to go 10 miles. Starving for fuel. The tank liner came out last week and I got it all cleaned out, there is no blockage in the fuel system. Two weeks ago the headlight went out so I direct wired it. When you turn the key the #2 yellow light comes on (turn signals), #3 red light comes on when you hit run, now the #9 red light comes on(low beam) #8 red light comes on (high beam when you touch it) headlight didn't work 2 weeks ago. Is my EHC going out? Do they work sometimes when they are taking a shit? Need to know because we are leaving for Dallas the 15th!!!!!!

Is your tank venting. Most models have the rubber tube coming out of the lower right on the bottom of the tank. If it's clogged or plugged then you could be creating a vacuum on the tank and starving the motor. If this is happening and you remove the cap you will hear the rush of incoming air.

As for the EHC lights I don't have the 04 model schematic or know of one posted on here. But you should have the yellow power on light and one red light when the run button is pushed indicating the ignition is powered up.
Any other red lights indicate grounds.

Good luck,

I thought that might be it but it would happen going down the road with the gas cap in my wife's hand.

Ok, then with the backfiring and knowing there is no blockage to the carb then I would trace the wiring to the coil and and ensure the wires are all tight and you plug wires are inserted all the way in.

Also, you cleaned the tank but did you pull the carb and clean it out. I pull mine often and always find the jets clogged with gunk. Possible some the liner debrie got down into the carb. At least pull the bowl and ensure it clear.

Did all that last night on the side of the road at dusk because I thought it might be some of the liner debris. I took all the tools to do it because of cleaning the liner out and still nothing was clogged and the bowl was clean. I'm wanting to lean towards electrical??????? I have 16000 miles and this stuff started happening overnight, it's properly jetted and tuned.

I would start searching for a grounded wire then. If you pull the tank you will see they pack a lot of wiring under there and you may find several frayed wires.
I had an intermittent oil pressure light flashing and it turned out to be a grounded wire under the tank.

I plan on doing that today: checking all the wires and putting electrical grease on all the connections. I guess my real question is: Do the EHC's start hitting and missing before they take a complete shit?

When my EHC went out it completely died and burned/melted everything under the seat.

when my ehc went it was very intermittent. The only problem was headlight high and low beams. Replaced it last month and all has been fine.

Don't know how much my bike and yours have in common but the problems sound the same. Mine turned out to be the coil. When it got hot it started acting up.I put three Drag Specialties coils on her and got the same thing each time. Finally bought the Accel coil and wires and had no problems for the last couple of weeks. She even seems a little spunker. Good luck-electrical is a bitch. And I think I have that 04 schematic in my book. Let me know if you need it and I'll try to post it.

Wires under tank all look good so I greased them again. I guess I should start looking at the cam sensor, coil and the ignition switch?????????????????

You may want to also double check the fuel strainer on the valve to make sure it did not plug up with any missed debries from the tank clean out.

Good luck and let us know what the ultimate outcome is.

while tank is off, clean it again with the fuel valve out,
flush both, flush gas line.
flush carb. inlet [ from bottom to top] flush it backwards,
with the tank linner gone, you will get a very fine dust/rust in the carb.
if this cleans it up, start using atf,[dexstron 3. or marvil oil in the tank all the time!] to stop the dust build up! :zz2cents:

I will clean everything out really good tomorrow and what do you mean about the oil? Do I add it every time I get gas? I hate to sound stupid but where is the nosecone????????

the nosecone is your cam cover on the right side of the crank case - your cam sensor may be getting affected by heat which affects the ignition - I think that is what Hoat is referring to.

Reloaderbmg, much of that stuff should I put in the tank and should I use it every time I put gas in the tank?

you need fuel, spark and compression for engine to run, unless you have a major problem you should have compression, when it stops running do you have spark, you can use a spark checker or the old way with screwdriver in end to wire and put need metal and should see a spark. If you have this, again when engine will not start have air cleaner assem. off so you can see inside carb. you can look for spray or even spray alittle carb. cleaner in and see if it start. once you no if it is fuel or spark, it cuts your checking in half.

you got it Lee

and chachas bike would shut down when hot thats why I said to pm him he may not have read this thread. no ignition no spark no riding

But the cam sensor is nothing but a metal cup.

I would think it would be the ignition itself then.
