Need Advise- Stalling and Hesitating

I have an 08 Mastiff. My bike runs fine on a full tank but after exactly 65 miles the bike hesitates on acceleration as if it has vapor lock. I have a vented gas cap and I've disconnected my fuel line and the gas flows fine. There's also a few gallons of gas left in the tank. After about 70 miles, the bike acts as if it's out of gas and I stall. Sometimes it will restart and other times I end up pushing it to a gas station. I'm guessing that it could be an issue with the carburetor but I'm not a great mechanic. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Make sure that the cap is venting. i had the same problem. cap was not venting. Blow in the end to see if its venting or not. that will eliminate one possible problem

Thanks, the cap is definitely venting. That was the first thing I did. I also removed all of the "guts" inside the cap.

Maybe not the prob but is it possible that the tank liner has come lose and is around the screen on the petcock ?. I know mine is coming lose in my tank but no fuel problems as of yet.

Have you put a fuel filter on it????
No, I've only got about 5K on the bike and I didn't think I needed it. Also, I've dealt with fuel filters in the past. The hesitation I'm experiencing is similar to a fuel filter problem but the bike runs fine for the first 65 miles. If the filter were clogged, wouldn't it hesitate all the time? Please educate me.

No was asking because some have put filters on and as the tank got lower they started having fuel starvation issues. Most filters don't have enuff flow rate to them for these bikes. Think people have had good luck with the Pingel. That was why I was asking.

Not sure if this is your problem I have seen where here in wyoming there is more and more ethanol-gasoline doing the same thing you described. I had a carb bike that wouldn't run on it.

I had this problem on a previous bike I had. Worth checking out.

Look down through the tank bung with a flashlight. The tank liner should be adhered securely to the interior of the tank wall. Be careful when refueling not to damage the liner at the backbone saddle when placeing the gas nozzle into the tank.

See if you can remove the fuel line somewhere where easy access and get free flowing gas through it. Not sure if the carbed bikes have a fuel screen at the petcock which may be clogged with pieces of tank liner. My EFI "07" Bulldog has no petcock on the tank at all.

On my replacement gas cap there was a white screwed in plastic cover that I removed because my original one didn't have it and it looked like it was sealing the cap vent passage.

Thanks. I'll try that over the weekend.

JUST THOUGHT I'D GIVE AN UPDATE. I TOOK MY FUEL LINE OFF TODAY AND THE GAS FLOWED FINE. I DECIDED TO REMOVE MY PETCOCK AND SEE IF ANYTHING WAS HAPPENING. THE PETCOCK FILTER WAS CLOGGED WITH GREEN PAINT FROM THE TANK LINER. SORRY FOR THE POOR PHOTO. I TOOK IT AFTER I REMOVED MOST OF THE PAINT BUT YOU CAN SEE A LOT OF IT AT THE BASE. MY BIKE IS ONLY A YEAR OLD SO I ASSUME THIS WILL BE A WARRANTY ISSUE. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP.

PS: Can't remember for sure, but think there was a tank-liner recall for some years/models, if I'm not mistaken. Someone else on here ought to know for sure. I do know for sure that several guys on here have had such issues. Search the threads for more details.

Good that ya found it. I know some of my liner came lose around the the fill hole (like excess chips, also I beleive it is gone off the tunnel of the tank. Guess thats a winter "to do"

how hard do you have to blow thru the gas cap to make it vent? I had to use a good amount of blow force to make it vent. should it be easy? or does it take alot of pressure?

probably no more than about 15#. it's purpose is to balance the internal pressure with the atmosphere without releasing fumes so depending on your elevation, sea level is what 14.7 psi, getting less as you go up.

I've been having the same problem with my '05 Pitbull, the fuel mileage has gone from 95 to 85 miles then it stalls. But when I check the tank for gas it is still visible!. I have checked the cap for proper ventilation, petcock is clear of debris, fuel line from tank to carb is clear, tank liner is fine, so what should be my next step? does the carb have a filter on the inside? also when I fuel up the tank only takes about 2 1/2 gallons to fill up and I know the specs say 4.5 capacity. It's driving me CRAZY!! Any suggestions??

Hold your hand up. Pull down your 3 fingers so your middle and index fingers are the only ones standing up vertical. Now, place a horizontal line across the top of the index finger. This more or less shows you the main [middle] full level from the gas cap on down to there.

You are now at reserve level and is not flowing. So you stall out, walk the bike to the gas pump, fill your 2 point gallons and you know it's a 4 gallon tank, but only takes 2 gallons each time.

Either you did not know you had RES as your reserve lever moving in 3 directions? Pick a horizontal side is the OFF. Straight down is ON. Swing the petcock lever to the other horizontal side and it is now in RES.

But if say the screen is clogged for reserve to empty right to the very bottom of that green paint settlement on page 1, there is your clogging if say you do turn the petcock to RES and nothing happens, she still fills up with 2 point whatever gallons all the time and stops running @ 65/85 miles each time is your average mileage for the ON position only = RES is clogged.

Make sense?
