need advice on assembly of pinion shaft gears

Quick question for an experienced engine builder- I'm examining the pinion shaft assembly in my 107 and I noticed the oil pump drive gear on the pinion can move forward / back about 1/4". The spacer ring between the oil pump drive gear and front pinion gear slides forward / back as well.

The pinion gear looks like it is fully seated and the pinion nut does not look loose- I'm just wondering whether that spacer between front pinion gear and oil pump drive gear is supposed to completely fill that gap and not allow the oil pump drive gear to move forward / back at all or if it is supposed to have a bit of front / back slide play?

That's normal.
Be sure that the chamfer on the oil pump gear is TOWARDS the center of the motor.( Fat part of the pinion shaft.)

Thank you John- Here is a pic of the pinion shaft and gears. Does that look right? there is about 3/16" back and forth play on the spacer washer between the pinion and pump drive gear. in the picture the spacer is sitting next to pump drive gear but I could slide it forward easily. the pump drive gear goes all the way back against fat part of pinion shaft and can slide forward about 3/16"

What's odd is it looks like the pinion gear is an early evo style? Since this is a 2001 bike I would have expected a 93-2000 pinion. I may need to get a different size pinion if the white one on here is not correct. the cam is a red gear. But I'm not sure if I'll need a super early pinion (89 and older) or the 90-92 pinion. Guess I'll only know if I end up taking it off.

S&S uses early style pinion shafts. Be sure to change the inner cam bearing after all the problems in that area.
