Need a new gas tank, question, help!

Hi guys,

My left tank is toast, I took it to get relined at a radiator place but after the guy looked at it he said 'no go' it's too bad and the cap is like glued or epoxied on.

I have a 2000 Husky and I know it's a FatBob stretched tank, problem is even the Custom shop near me didn't know which one is the exact one to order. The difference is the stretched part near the seat, looks like different lengths and angles where the seat fits against the tank. Mine is about 3 1/2 inches from the rear center mount to where it starts to curve for the seat.

Does anyone know who was BigDog's supplier for tanks?? And any other help would be greatly appreciated. Great weather and I'm stuck until I can get a new one and get it painted.

I've got a used set from a 2004 Pitbull. They look awful close. Lemme know if ya want to give it a try......

not being a smartass but you do realize that the left gas cap is reverse thread right? The guy I bought my bike from thought it was a dummy cap.

Yeah, I know but it still didn't want to come off, Thanks though, sometimes you don't know when they reverse threads or not.

Well I finally got the cap and paint protector off, there was something gunked all up on the threads that made it a bitch. Should there be? It was like thick locktite.

The greenish liner is all coming off and it's pretty rusty inside, but I'd rather keep ones that I know fit then buy new ones if I can reline these.

Any recommendations on what cleaner and liner to use?? That you can do yourself.

Even if it will last good for a few years that's good enough for me! I just want to get back on the road..

I have a 2001 Mastiff. The liners fell /broke apart in all of them. You don't need a liner unless you're gonna leave the tank empty for years. Keep gas in them and they won't rust. Managed with tanks without liners for 50 years and never had a problem. The gas caps have plastic/nylon threads. Do a search on gas caps here. Anywhoo, they are disolved/swell when exposed to ethanol, which the Government has now made sure we have added to all of our gas (except marine gas) for our own good. You can put vasoline on the threads which helps some. I called around to old dealers and found a cap a guy still had on the shelf. I switch them out every 6 months or so and I have no more problems. Since you have the paint saver already off you can get a cap and liner from the manufacturer. There was a thread on this last week with numbers etc. If you have rust in your tank now, I'd take it to a good body shop and they have rust stop/disolver that you can slosh around and rinse out. You don't need a liner. I've got a 1944 Indian Chief with a gas tank with no liner and no problem yet.
