My starter took a dump

it took them about 10 days because they had to send parts, re-man. starter, and new clutch assem. and then install. if you get your .295 for carb. and get to my shop I can check exhaust and try and get carb. right.

You bet B. Let me get it fixed under warranty and get it back and then I'll call you and make a time that's good for you to try and get that done. yes I do have the .295 thanks to V.

I also get a huge bang only when the bike is hot and try to restart it,of course it has to happen at a gas station when someone is admiring it.How would going to an open primary affect it ? just curious.:cheers:

JT... I HAVE NO CHOICE, THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES OPEN TILL 8PM ON WEEKDAYS FOR SERVICE. I DON'T GET OFF WORK TILL 6PM SO THAT ONLY LEAVES ME 2 HOURS TO GET HOME AND LOAD THE BIKE ON A TRAILER AND GET IT ALL THE WAY TO GLEN BURNIE. NO... I HATE TAKING IT THERE BUT NO CHOICE... PRAY MY DOG SURVIVES THIS EXPERIENCE FOR ME , OK?:bang:

Mine has banged a few times when trying to start in gear. Starting in neutral has eliminated the bang.

BW, I always without fail start mine in netural. Old habit for over 45 years of riding. Mine still banged hard especially here at the end before the starter drive jackshaft snapped. The guys at American V-Twin tonight were actually kinda cool once I got to talk to them in person. Now, what kind of quality work they do is another issue to be seen. I told them that if they do a solid job on this warranty repair then I can promise them when It's time to spend my hard earned dollars on work, they will get my money for sure. Nothing like a little honest motovation. So, now I pray and miss my Dog.

DV, as usual you were right. Apparently Dennis has called BDM and got my clutch cable warranted with a 1 time good will ok. Also found a portion of my stock muffler broken inside and had BDM ok a whole new system which he has already installed. Now as to the starter, he can't find any reason for the broken jackshaft. No EHC issues from the downloads and the compression releases are free and not sticking. BDM's engineers and Dennis are thinking since this is the only known instance of a snapped jackshaft they believe it was a metalurgy failure and the original starter is being examined by the BDM metalurgy engineers for just that cause. I pick it up tomorrow night after work and I can't wait to get my dog home. Never knew how much I missed it till it was away from me for more than a week. Hopefully they are correct and this was a one time wierd instance. I'll post tomorrow night on how the bike is after I ride it all the way home which is a good ride from there to my house. Dennis said that the mechanics of the inner primary were not affected at all by this incident. That my clutch carrier nut is tight and my adjuster shoe is hardly worn at all. God bless Big Dog for stepping up and covering some things other companys might not. Thanks so much for all your help and assistance in this matter.

yea guys, it is good to be back on the road again. I have to work this holiday weekend but I'm sure as hell going to find some time to ride even if it "F'in" rains!!!

Here's hoping all of my Big Dog brethren have a great holiday weekend, ride safe everyone!!!

Ok I picked my Dog up tonight. It is so strange to not hardly hear it run with the new stock complete exhaust system. But, it runs like new and no more de-cell pop. They believe that the starter issue was a one time very rare occurance in fact the only one ever. Greg the tech asked me how I can only have 4 rev hits in 15,000+ miles. He said he has bDM's there with less than a thousand miles and many many rev hits. I just told him I bought mine to enjoy and take good care of becuase it's my last bike and I adore it and just won't abuse it. American V-twin has on the surface done a fine job. No complaints , at least not yet. I rode it for over 65 miles one way and it ran flawlessly. All I know is it's very good to see my Dog back in the Dog house again. :):)

tried jumping it off, nothing. excellent stranger helped me push it off and after 3-4 tries, got it cranked. thank you excellent stranger!!!! hard as hell to push-start a bike that heavy on flat ground.

got the battery changed out and the new one seems to start the bike better than it ever has. thing is, fresh from interstate, they say its top voltage is only around 12.9 which seems low to me (very close to borderline). i guess we will see. problem with the other battery, even though the battery was "factory activated", the dealer didn't know he was supposed to charge it before it was installed and i didn't know it hadn't been.

:bang: :bang: well, the biggest reason i changed out the battery was to see if the voltage on the old battery was the cause of the starter banging really hard occasionally. went for a ride today, about 50 miles, so i know the battery had time to recharge from the cranking. got home and turned off the bike to open the garage door, got back on and went to crank back up, and BANG. whole bike shakes, but then it cranks on the second try. gotta figure this one out before something breaks!!!!!!!!! or the seals start leaking. :bang: :bang:

Another angle to ponder...
I bought the V new in April 2005. In the first 2 years I went through 7 starters and 2 primary cases because of banging and failing starters. It was determined that the hole the jackshaft goes through wasnt milled exactly right. Ive been wondering if the original jackshaft was ever replaced whith all those starter replacements. We'll, the banging never really stopped, but it did happen a lot less, but its still just as loud! On 29 Nov, I got the last bang...broken jackshaft. I towed her home and pulled the primary and sure enough I found a cute lil gear lying in my cover. I inspected everywhere, and it all looked good. Ive ordered my jackshaft through J&P Cycles for $80. I know my battery is strong as I replaced it mid-2009. When I spoke to BDM Tampa, I was told that rolling (fore or aft) when engaging the starter will cause the slam. This last time I was rolling backwards out of a driveway.
