Has anyone heard of this happening?

Something in key hole must have broke, my spare key now just slides in and out in either the on or off position

I lost 4 keys which fell out over the past year. :bang:The last one included my entire key chain. ::angry: I kept forgetting to take the key out, and two firends who borrowed the bike lost the keys when they fell out. Moespeeds put in a new Harley lock for me last week. :2thumbs: The BD lock had broken internally and would have failed entirely eventually.

Hell ya!!! I posted this two weeks ago....

http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/general/14567-dont-leave-key-ignition.html

Just thought I'd share this with the new Dog owners in case they don't know this.

I had a new back tire installed on the Dog yesterday. When I dropped off the bike, I told the owner "DONT LEAVE THE KEY IN THE IGNITION, IT WILL FALL OUT". Its my only key, so don't Fucking loose it. I told him I didn't want to leave him my key in the first place because of this.

So after 4 hours of not hearing back from the shop (oh ya, its my brother in laws brothers shop by the way, who is one of the best Harley Mechs in NH. He worked for 10 years at a Harley Dealer where he is a Harley certified Mech. He was also a Big Dog service center before they changed the rules about having to be a dealer of Big Dog to be a service center) I finally call to find out whats up.

He took the bike for a test ride (which he has done many times for the previous owner) after changing the tire and : GUESS WHAT", he lost the FUCKING KEY somewhere on the road between the shop and the two mile trip he took.

He had his wife out looking for it, so I drove over and walked the loop, and I actually found it. Unbelievable!!!!

So remember, remove the key from the ignition, or at least have it secured to the bike so if it does fall out, it won't be lost.....

I'm a little curious. :loony: For the past couple of months, my key comes out covered in what looks like black oil. It's not from spraying anything into the keyhole. Is my keyswitch on its way to failing too? The key doesn't come out when turned to the "on" position, but it is a little loose.

Mine fell out also. I bought a newer updated switch from BDM for $75 bucks and no more falling out. As soon as I install my wire plus, I will have it to sell to whoever wants a newer switch.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm a new Big Dog owner and this is the stuff they don't tell you at the dealership.

Hey Montana,
Usually the ones that fall out are the older Dogs, like mine. Its a 2003. I think they changed the switch in the newer ones...... Maybe someone who knows will jump in.

I lost two on my 03 (shop lost one!) then lost one early on my 05. New switches now don't seem to have a problem or not as the older ones did. My latest one has lasted over 4 yrs with quite a few miles on it but it seems pretty loose now.

Also there are many threads on this in the archive. :D

It seems to me that they locks get worn out from the key jiggling inside. When metal rubs on metal it will wear over time. On my Harley the spline on my heal-toe shifter wore out the same way. I don't know if I'm correct but it sounds plausible to me.

Has anyone ever extracted their key and it was covered in "black oil/grease"? Is there a lubricant inside the working mechanism of a keyswitch? Mine may be on its way out! Better get a carabiner quick!

My key "almost" fell out one day. So I took part of the switch that's normally used for a key buzzer and hooked it up in reverse to make......

MY HEAD LIGHT FLASHES FROM HIGH BEAM TO LOW BEAM THEN TO OFF, MY MARKER LIGHTS FLASH FROM RUNNING TO LEFT SIGNAL THEN THE RIGHT SIGNAL THEN TO THE BRAKE LIGHTS THEN OFF, MY HORN BLOWS ON AND OFF, MY TACH. LIGHTS FLASH ON AND OFF AND SPEEDO SWEEP GOES ROUND AND ROUND, MY MOTOR CUTS ON AND OFF AND SPITS AND COUGHS AND BLUBBERS AND THEN BACKFIRES, ALL OF MY WINDOWS GO UP AND DOWN, MY LOCKS LOCK AND UNLOCK, AND MY DOME LIGHT FLASHES ON AND OFF..........

Just before the key falls all the way out, ...so I can catch it! :2thumbs:

:D:cheers:
Hell, and I thought that's what happens when your EHC is going bad!:roll::roll:

My key fell out of my 06 Mastiff yesterday:eek:.
I did go back and find it about a mile from my house. I am going to start taking the key out after I turn the bike on. It should be moderately safe in my pocket:).
