I've been battling an ignition problem for about a week now. It all started last Friday. I go out to the garage try to start the bike. It turns over good and strong but wont start. pull the seat and no light on the ignition module.
Pull a plug and check for spark, none.
Check voltage at the coil, got 12 volts.
Check voltage at the ignition module, got 12 volts.
Check voltage at cam pick up, got 12 volts.
Turn the key off, back on again, starts right up.
Drive to the end of the street, back fires thru exhaust and dies. Cycle the key, starts right up. Turn around to go home dies in 100 feet. does this two more times before I get back home.
Pull in the garage, get on the Forum and start searching. Read the service manual, no help there. I don't have all the software and fancy test gadgets.
So I have not been able to track it down.
Yes I have searched and read all of the related threads and preformed all of the recommended tests.
I have voltage from the EHC to the ignition module.
I have voltage from the ignition module to the timing pick up.
I have voltage from the pick up to the coil.
I have ohmed out the pick up as instructed by Doc. It ohms good.
I cannot find a short or frayed wire anywhere.
I have ohmed the coil. Primary 3 ohms, secondary 12680 ohms.
Plug wires are new, plugs are new. All OK.
No ground shorts on any wire other than black.
plug everything back up turn on the key, starts right up. Drive away and I cannot recreate the problem. Last night.
Went out tonight, no start, no ignition light on module, but is on EHC.
Same tests same results. Plug everything back together, starts right up.
:bang::bang::bang:

I don't think it is the EHC, I have no other symptoms or fault lights and all other electrical works when key is on.

I initially assumed it was a bad ignition module. But I cannot verify it.

I've read several posts about the same problem on the same bike, but no one ever follows up with their solution. What's the point in asking for help and getting it, if you won't follow up so as to help the next guy.

Sorry for the long post, but I know it helps to have all info up front.

Can anyone help? Please!

Sounds like your ignition system is going bad. Very common problem, more so than the EHC....Replace it with a Twin Tec Ignition Kit...the Kit comes with new Internal Ignition system (eliminating under seat) , New single fire coil, and plug wires...Retailing for just under $390...well worth it. Part number from Drag is...
2101-0242.

Next time it dies on you check to see if you still have headlight/running lights on and report back findings.

If you still have the lights on chances are its not EHC related. Could be ignition related like bigdogtech stated.

If you suspect the ignition module, send it in to Thunderheart. They will test it for free and send it back. Worth the effort if you're unsure as to its health.

Isuspect you are right, i just wish there was some way to eliminate all other components and narrow it down to be sure before spending the money.

Yes i still have all functions after it quits. No other electrical symptoms. Including the horn and all lights working as they should.

Ive already purchased the coils and wires as i am going to the dual coils set-up.

I would like to source one local to dallas so that i might go riding while i have a day off. First one in 3 weeks

Strokers don't have any in stock?? Talk to Lena or Amy. They might even throw you a discount.
Strokers aint got squat, according to Jason they are not stocking this stuff anymore. Best they could do was maybe Tuesday.
Called the Harley dealer to see about getting a new Cam sensor, the late Model Evo style cam sensor at Longhorn and Dallas HD.....$170.
Yes that's right a $40 dollar part from Drag Specialties. $170 at the HD parts house.

What I thought was going to be a bust, has turned out to be a GOOD day.
A guy I know that works at Two Wheel World turned me on to a fellow that runs a parts and repair shop at his home. He hooked me up with a DYNA 2Ki for $190:up:

So I hope to be putting this problem to rest tonight. I guess I'll be up till the wee hours again tonight. I've got a hot date tomorrow and she's been really excited about riding the dog. I hope I don't disappoint.

I'll keep ya posted, Thanks for all the replies. More to come....Later

Problem resolved, riding all day today with the new DYNA 2Ki. Turned out that it was the cam sensor. Had an old buddy with years of experience confirm it today.

It's hard to believe how much difference this DYNa ignition made, It starts better, runs better, smells better and now that I don't worry about it, it even looks better.

The thunderheart ignition in these bikes is a POS. BigDog should be ashamed of themselves for putting that crap on this bike.

Can't wait for the dual coils and cool new mount. It should be even better then in single fire with dual coils.

See ya goin riding!!!!!!!!!:whoop:
