Markey-Marc, thanks for the input. With the motor just rebuilt by S&S, I would have thought they would check the rocker shaft clearances. I am also considering that since the noise only appears after full operating temp has been reached, that maybe the spring collars might be slightly hitting the inside of the rocker box at operating temp. Sound plausible to you?

Personally, I'd be on the phone with s&s and the QC department, having them pay for whatever it cost to remove and send the engine to them or the whole bike for them to figure it out..

It's pretty simple and not to complicated, and for the life of me I still can't understand why seasoned motorcycle mechanics can't figure this one out. You pay good money to send your bike into a shop, they charge you and hand it back to you with the same issue. Much of this, if not all is right in the poor design of the rocker box. There are two corrections that can be made, depending on which one is causing the noise. The problem is very visible and the cure is not complicated. Once fixed, you can't even hear if the engine is running or not.

Worn valve guides don't make noise and this might come to a surprise, but there is no power loss from loose guides either. Metal to metal makes noise.

I would get yo to do mine Andy but I'm in Australia so bad luck.
Maybe I should at least get you to make me the thrust washers. If and when you will be making some
for some one else can you make me a set please?

Didn't see the part that noise only started after rebuild.....sorry......why did you have it rebuilt in the first place? Mileage?

It could be a multitude of things and many have been mentioned....it only happens after engine is warm, so oil is hot......it is completely plausible that a 'new' part they put in was defective from manufacturing (springs etc).....I myself have had tunnel vision where I say to myself, self-it cannot be that part, its new.....and it ends up being that part.....

If it's under warranty, I will not suggest you do anything yourself to the engine and risk voiding the warranty.....if a shop says that the noise is 'normal' (as a few do), find another shop.....

I'm pretty sure S&S will get it resolved.....if they checked clearances, they should have them notated, so you could just ask them for that information.

I am fed up with the valve train noise. I cant stand it, sounds terrible. I wear earbuds 95% of the time. Every time I don't, I am disgusted with the noise. I plan to pull the heads this winter and do whatever it takes to quiet them down.

The heat is omitted through the top of the engine. The growth rate on certain parts is immense from the heat, and that leads to components that should be stable and fastened, to float against other parts of the same material. No different then Harley, they built these bikes with poor engineering and inferior parts. This is the sacrifice you subject yourself to, when making a purchase.

The correction of these issues is not a money making deal for me by any means, it's to help others reduce their frustration and enjoy their bikes. I am fortunate that I have the machinery to do as I need to, to alter and re-engineer. I could understand the frustration.
