MMy turn needing electrical help

Hey Folks,

Read and applied all I could before posting.

It's not starting. So

"07 117 on a Chopper.

All seems normal until I hit start. I get a grumble as if it wants to turn over, then a horn beep followed by blinking turn signals. When I turn the key on, I get a yellow light with a blinking green light under it. When I hit run, I get a red light. when I hit start, I hear the momentary attempt at a start, then nothing with blinking turn signals, with the red light going out and the yellow and blinking green remaining.

HIstory: Had been having concerns about battery. Attempting starts, it would strain as if the CR's weren't kicking in. So today I put in a new battery and suffered all I wrote above.

Troubleshooting and attempts at remedy so far:

Jump off of strong car battery... started once on the 2nd attempt; never again.

Cleaned all connections and terminals.

Removed cover off back of solenoid and cleaned all contacts/copper surfaces.

Pulled plugs. still acted as if compression was stopping the attempt at start.

Rolled bike in gear minus plugs; all is free.

Checked voltage. Mid 13's down to solenoid. Upon startup attempt, I get .38v for a second off the starter side of solenoid, then nothing.

Edit: Also, along the way I read to jump across the main terminals on the solenoid. When I did that the starter spun like crazy, but did not engage.

I'm lost.

Help...

Steve

Off hand it still sounds like a batt issue? Just to be clear you tried to crank it with the plugs out, correct?

Also have you checked the ground wire to the starter. It would be on the top starter bolt. Loose? Corrision?

If you have a batt tender put the new batt on it until it goes into hibernate mode before you try using it, that will gaurantee a full charge.

also if the old batt was getting weak you might want to check your charging system when you get it running.

Thanks V, but yea, all those things covered... Ground bolt removed, all cleaned and lightly sanded to remove any corrosion/tarnish/contamination. Yes, attempted turning it over w/o plugs, and it would not turn the engine over. Put new battery on tender and showed totally charged. And since the post, I talked to my shop and he tested the old battery and said it was charged and strong via a draw down test. And again, I tried jumping it off the Optima in my hot rod, and it did the same thing.

I'm hoping someone will post with a layman's explanation into the led's on the EHC. I'm getting dizzy reading surrounding info, but nothing specific about the light sequence I'm witnessing.

But thanks,

Steve

There is a How-To on reading your EHC LEDs. Still sounds like a voltage issue though as the blinking lights are your warning.
If you continue having starter issues give me a call and I can walk you through all the tests on it.

Thanks so much. I'll be on it first thing in the morning. First on the list will be to pick up my old battery and give it a try. It was still working when I took it out.

I'll also search using the term "reading your EHC LEDs" and find that info.

Hopefully I won't have to call! But I will. :)

Ray and others,

thanks for the help. it was as obvious as suspected. New battery = bad battery. It bragged high CCA and high amp/hours. Turned out, not so much. Picked my old battery up from the shop, installed, and the beast fired right up. So a Tomioka is on order.

Thanks again,

Steve

Good you got it worked out. You ight still want to check your charging system just for the heck of it. At idle you should be getting 14.2 volts back to the batt.

Hey V, no prob there. I had checked the charging system even before I brought in the new battery.

Thanks Five!
