Miles on reserve?

I did a search and didn't really find an answer but I have read that some members only made it about 3 miles on reserve. My manual says my reserve holds 0.7 gallons and Im getting 33 mpg . I have never ran dry but my math says a lot more than 3 miles?
Here is the answer:

Run your dog until the trip says 100 miles, then pull over and put 3 gallons in it. If it takes more than 3 gallons, head for a place they have beer AND can change your plugs. That's all there is to it really. The reserve on a dog is just for show, not a useable feature.

x2!

I get 30 mpg on a good tank, and I think I'm running a little lean.

My reserve has gotten me at least 10 miles. I try not to use it, but when I have to hit reserve I go directly to the nearest gas station.

haha maybe so.. I am not riding it like a sport bike. But I am not scared to runa few gears from a stop light. ha.

But to be fair, I can only check it when I ride with a friend that has a Odometer since mine has no speedo or Odometter.

on days when ew group ride, I have a buddy I am normally with and he will reset a trip meeter when we fill up, and then before we split up to go home we top back off and figure out MPGs. so those are normally crusing days around back roads and shit.

If I'm cruising around town, fast n furious like, I sputter at around 75 miles on a tank...if I'm cruising down the highway at 67-90, I can go about 125 miles on a tank.....on reserve....2-3 miles downhill...hahahahahahaha :2thumbs:

the reserve gas ( the petcock ) vary..! due to the length of the tube, and position in the tank
easily fixed.

I have three bikes with a reserve petcock.
Dumb as it sounds , I have actually tested the reserve on all of them.
easy to do , set your bike level , run the gas out until it stops on "on" position.
then switch to reserve , and measure the gas that "reserve will provide.

then you know approx. how far you can go .
oh btw, if it is very short on reserve , then "add a little to the " on" pipe on the petcock.
(short hose , or solder a bit on )

also a good time to clean out the reserve hole in the bottom of the petcock.
"they do get "gunked "up from lack of use .

A little maintenance in the cool evening sure beats walking.

3 miles is all I can get on reserve. I`m getting about 90 miles from a tank of fuel. 2005 Big Dog Chopper , with the motor worked.

And I recently think I figured out that my bike's reserve doesn't work....I filled up after sputtering to the gas station, and just thought to myself, well, I'll just leave it ON reserve to see how far I can go......been riding like that last 85 miles......hahahaha

Yep... I've had to hit the reserve several times while on 5 day rides... I've gone 15 miles on reserve and always made it to a gas station so, I don't know how far before it would die... I have a 2008 Mutt 117ci stock except for pipes and paint.
