Mikuni or S&S?

Spoke to one BD mechanic who is very popular, he has a Mikuni on his.

Then spoke to a popular mechanic in another state, he highly rec S&S.

So....what gives?

Is this a preference thing or is there a real difference in performance and reliability?

Thanks in advance.

I think it's the old Ford versus Chevy debate... Just depends on what somebody likes.

the Mic has more circuits to finer tune then the S&S

as far as carbs go, the PSI is the shit

Edelbrock works on Ford & Chevy's fairly well (ya I run Holley's too..:D ), seem to work pretty well on dog's too imho....:2thumbs:

Mikuni all the way for me - only thing Trotta uses. Very smooth throttle response. If you get one order the small chrome knobs that replace those two ugly hanging cables for choke and idle. Only drawback, if any, idle fluctates by a few hundred depending on air temp, so every now and then you have to adjust idle while sitting at a light. Thats why the chrome knobs are good to have. I normally run my idle on high side, around 1100 , so if she fluctuates it wont go lower than 900. It seems to be more efficent wth better milage. Other benefit is it does not stick out as far as a SS, so youre knee wont rub on air cleaner or V stack.

For the price of the Mikuni you can get a XXX S&S carb that you can bolt on yourself, and not have to worry about changing or getting any adapters for your air intake. With this you'll get rid of the dead spot at about 2500 or 3000 RPMs (Based on your Jetting), and better low end and mid range perfomance. I don't worry about top end cause I rawly go pass 100 mph.

properly dialled in you shouldn't get a flat spot whatever you use. I've not yet run a Mik but do have a HSR 42 on my build - from what I've been told they're less sensitive to temp / altitude changes than S&S. The tech I use swears by Mikuni

As Sul said tho - PSI is the bollocks but then so is the price
