I didnt mind shaving a bit off if it means more miles per tire. The Avons were only good for 5-6k. The Venoms were fantastic. I got a bit over 10k outta it. Cobras just plain suck cause their too soft in my opinion. Ahhhh, 6 of one, half a dozen of another. Thats why we have choices....

98% of my riding is 2 up and I think it happened from a man hole/pot hole that caused the crack because I run at 40 psi
We must have softer compound roads here, my last Avon had 9k on it when I changed it with quite a bit of life left in it. Thats a possibility. May be due to riding style as well. More than likely its the straight flat Kansas roads.
My sidwalls are lucky to see any wear while the center is bald as me.

Not a fan of metzlers. They suck i went back to Avon and will be staying with them

Year old tire is not necessarily bad, tire casings are generally good for about six years and are used past that in some cases. Could be any number of reasons why it failed, happens to all manufacturers.
I'm with ya on that one. No complaints on Avon.

I've cut down to the cords to check on a old Metzler 300 and the sidewall rubber ridge depth to the cords is a good 3/8". Bro2 and I have shaved a good 3/16" off the rubber ridge on both our tires and have no problems doing it. Put the bike on a cycle scissor jack stand and get the rear tire off the ground. Start the engine with trans and put it in 1st gear with someone holding the bike and use a BELT sander with a 60 grit belt. Knock down to clear the belt a good 3/16" plus inch.
We had our bikes tied and clamped on the lift with the scissor jack to raise the rear tire.
I will be buying Avon next time. Two Metzlers and they wear funny flat on the left side. My current Metzler is due for replacement now and I will do it over the winter time. We both run with Dyna Beads as well.
