Metz sidewall cracking

No. I was just making a point that tires does in fact last longer than you manufacturers are claiming they do. Stored outside in the sun and in the worst condition possible, I agree with you about the age, and realize that is what you must assume due to obvious reasons. However, stored out of the sun and inside, they do last longer and there is no need to scare someone with 8 year old tires that they will blow up and kill him and his whole family because of it, as long as the said tires appears like new. I appreciate all input you have, as it is obvious that you have a high level of knowledge of tires, I just have practical experience through 45 years of riding, including three championships in Road Racing. That's all, first round on me buddy...
I probably built the tires you won those three Road Racing championships :D And let me buy the first round

So when you purchase tires how do you read the date codes so that you know you are getting a new recently built tire and not one that has been warehoused for a couple of years?

Here's my 2.7cents. I had cracking on my 300 mets, both sides and all the way round. I called Metzeller and they have a warrantee of 4yrs on theirs tires. You have to go through a dealer (basically anyone who sells them) and you can make a claim. The shop will remove your tire, call metzeller customer service for a 5 min conversation. They will fax them a form to sign and attach to the tire. Then Fedex will come pick it up. Then it should take 5-6weeks to hear back on how much refund you'll get back (dependent in tire wear I guess).
Now, I purchase a new tire right then (actually front as we'll) and got it mounted because I didn't want to be out of riding. I heard some places, if you purchased it from them, might swap it out and deal with the claim themselves. I purchased the cracked tire at another location so i wasn't doing the claim through them. So you could either wait for the coin from metzeller to discount the tire, or pay full and wait for a partial refund. I for one, had a prick or a time finding some one that a. can remove a 300 tire and willing to do the claim for me. Even the local Big Dog dealer didn't want anything to do with me, even though I said I would be buying 2 new tires and paying for all labor out of pocket. After my third message, speaking to them twice and being fob'd off I gave up.
Anyway, I'm still waiting on word from Mets so will see what happens.

Well I sent them an email. We will see how it turns out. I am not very impressed with the lifespan of this thing. The contact patch is in good shape, just the sidewalls have me worried. I still ride the hell out of it though. I guess if it explodes and my bike is totaled Ill just get the insurance money and a new ride free of all the little gremlins this one has.

Assuming you aren't totaled along with the bike.

Franco, you need to start doing some burn outs. It's a simple solution to keeping fresh tires on our bikes.

Don't know much about rubber, but I have an old BMW enduro wich I seldom use back home in Finland. It has old tires (about 10 years) and last time I rode it I noticed they have become seriously slippery... They still look pretty good.

I know I will need to bite the bullet soon.... but I have not found a mechanic I can trust yet and I am scared of doing it myself... :bang:

Oh well.... I guess it will be like all other stuff I've done b4... always nervous the first time. I will pick Andrew's brain in May when he's over my way. :D

Many years ago, I was at the Birmingham Barber Vintage bike festival and purchased a No-Mar Tire Changer with a discount. They have videos to help you out. It was expensive but so is messing up a Big Dog Wheel. I went with the truck receiver hitch attachment and added a wheel balancer later. I paid around $550 back then for I think it was the Junior Pro Model. Changing a 330mm tire is a piece of cake. I use it on all my bikes, cars and truck.
