Just a quick thank you to all who helped and advised. Got the new battery in, checked all connections both Positive and ground, all looks good, so I hit the start button and it came to life instantly, no sign of trouble. Will be checking those connections monthly, at least.

..... I really don't want to fry another battery. Suppose I should peel back the rubber boot and also check my connection at the starter.......
The heat will only be where the loose connection is. That's because of the resistance caused by the loose connection, or the fact that a smaller partial connection can't carry the high current of starting without overheating.

Put the big starter wires directly on the battery terminals, then any smaller wires between them and the bolt.
