Well I just got my 08 PITBULL back from the warranty paint job work. Took 4 months so needless to say I was excited to see my better half today. All seemed to be good. Started right up and everything was fine heading home from the shop. I had asked the shop to look at my clutch because it seemed to get harder to shift after I rode for a while when I dropped it off. They said all was good when I picked it up.

So the problem I am having is that when I shift into 4th gear. The engine revs up and it acts like the transmission is slipping. It works fine in 1,2,3 and 5th gear.(wasnt on the interstate so I couldnt get up into 6th). It will go when it is in 4th but the moment that you try to accelerate it just seems to rev and it will gain speed very slowly. I dont know if this is a tranny or a clutch issue. I thought that if it was either I would experience it in all of the gears. The cluth lever seems to have about 1/4 inch of play in it and I didnt know if that is what needed to adjust. It just doesnt feel like a clutch issue.

Any advice is GREATLY appreciated.

1/4 in. of play in the lever seams a little to much. But I don't know if that will cause any clutch slipping.

I read a post about clutch slippage and there were several responses saying others were having this problem in 4th gear with the clutch slipping. I just dont want to screw it up too bad before I get to the dealer. It just pisses me off because I told them to check it out and they acted like I was crazy and it was fine. Another trip to the dealer.

I think I have been to this dealer before when I was down for the U.S. nationals a few years ago. 4 of us rode in on our dogs and we were not impressed with them. Not very friendly. I bet they forgot to even check it out, due to your bike being there so long for the paint repair. Hope they take care of ya.

The dealership owner is not that friendly but the service guys are great, typically. If it wasnt for those guys I would not go there at all. I adjust the lever today and that took out most of the freeplay. It still did not help the slippage in 4th gear though. I will go in this weekend and try to do the clutch adjustment on the push rod and see what that does. If not it is back to the dealer to see what they say. Im not going to screw with it much before I just go buy a bandit clutch. I want to ride the thing not look at it.

Any certain RPMS its doin this at? And if so have you tried
5th gear at the same RPMS.
Also when it feels like its slippin in 4th have you watched the speedo for any MPH increase ?
I notice on my bike in the higher gear range 4th, 5th (rarely use 6th. That it felt like it just wasn't goin any faster, reving real slow up around 3500 RPM. I've changed the cam and added the XXX carb thus I have more a little more power and less of like the bike just ain't goin. Just wonderin?

i had a problem like this it turned out to be a shift fork?? if it was a clutch is should do it in all gears, im not sure if the gears are pressed w/ a keor not maybe you broke the key??

Im not sure what a shift fork it but I have determined that it isnt the clutch. I guess it is back to the dealership. I was watching the same RPM's in 3,4,and 5th. It was just slippage in 5th. I am getting the RPMs but not the speed. I hope this will be a simple fix.

Not to sound like a jerk , but are you sure you arn't lugging the motor in 5th gear. From 5th gear if I want to hit it and go I down shift to 4th then gas it. Or does this happen as soon as you shift into 5th.

I've had the same problem with mine. My clutch needed to be adjusted to factory spec's. Once that was done I applied locktite to my clutch pushrod jam nut which kept backing off from vibration. :2thumbs:

Not all great advice here. A clutch will slip under high load. High gear/low rpm. A loose clutch cable adjustment won't cause slippage but a hard shift problem. If you clutch push rod is to tight it could cause the problem. If it slips at 2200 in 4th pulling a hill, it should do the same in 5th at the same rpm.

So do you think I just need to adjust my pushrod and locktite it. Maybe it is just comming loose? Did this completely eliminate all of your slipping issues

Vegas, not sure if you've had this problem happen before, but what littlef66 is experiencing does happen as said. Slippage in only one gear and all other gears are fine, sounds weird I know, but unless you experience it, it's hard to believe! Normally you would expect this to happen in all gears... I would hit the highway hammering through the gears until I hit 4th and the engine would rev up like a bat outta hell but the bike was struggling to go in that gear, so I would throttle down and throttle up slowly so the engine would keep up till switching to the next gear. Weird stuff huh?
