Mainshaft bearing failure.

She never skipped a beat... was getting ready to take a 200 miler, checking the fluids noticed tranny was low, added..... added more.... added more.... finally decided to drain it and make sure proper amount was in her (20 oz) and nothing came out! WTF! So tore into her and found one hell of a nice mess.... main shaft seal was tore to hell and the bearing retainer was in pieces all in the primary. Never once felt nothing. Shifted fine, ran thru the gears with out missing a beat. Damn this sucks!

Any one know what would cause this? 7K on her. 07K9

Notice all the bearings are on the bottom touching each other... not suppose to be... :eek:


And so this is what she looks like now....



Any advise?

How about some tips on getting the shocks off so I can pull the tranny?

Ouch that's not good chaingunner. Good thing you caught it when you did. Wish I could help ya out but have not had to go that route. What's the manual given up anything?

Thanks, I'll do that.

You wouldn't happen to know a trick with taking the shocks off the bottom so I can get to the tranny bolts do you dead? I haven't tried anything as of yet...

Just jack up the bike to relieve the pressure on the rear wheel, then support the rear wheel and just remove the bolts holding the shocks, it's easy! :2thumbs:

Thanks CD, real sucky thing is we have a trip (all paid for) on the ferry over to the HD museum and then north to the UP and back down and across the bridge....on June 25th....:bang: Made the wife cry when I told her it was broke, she really loves the skoot!

I think I may have to expedite my skoot addition and just by the damn Street Glide.:)

I used a plubing torch to heat the fittings on the shocks to losen the red lock tight. Should spin right off

Like Hoat said and Dead did not -- use heat (torch great - heat gun works for me) first.

If they come off "easy" they AIN'T on right.....

Thanks chacha and Hoat. I put a wrench on her last night (just to see how tight they were), and there on GOOD, so I will break out the torch tonight.

Good luck. they come off way easier with the heat.

Hard part is having offset claw wrenches to apply the right torque....I think Hoat just beats his into submission :lol:

Interesting this is exactly what happened to me 18K .. I bought a 1,000 mile transmission and still riding, but check all fluids each time.

The same exact thing happened to my bike ...as we speak I have it torn down,getting lotsa little tidbits from all these trans bearing posts and threads......however I didnt have any trouble removing my trans bolts,5 of the 6 were actually missing.......

Tranny case

I just f'd my mainshaft bearing. Does the tranny need to be removed to replace it or can it be pulled while on the bike?

Actually just f'd my case on the input shaft. I'm such a idiot.
