Hey guys waiting on some recall repairs on my truck and figured I'd share my July 4th story.
The wife and I took a ride on the Harley the afternoon of the 4th. After about 90 miles we were working our way back home. Made a stop at a restaurant to grab some supper to go. Loaded the ole lady and chicken wings and blasted off toward home. About a half mile from the restaurant we had a guy run a red light and turn in front of me at the last minute. Did what I could but not enough. Hit him in the rear quarter panel and went down on my right side. The wife spent the night in the hospital. Tore up her right hand and broke 1 finger. I spent 4 days in with a collapsed lung, cracked ribs and the usual road rash but nothing broke but my pride and my road glide. Thankful to be on that big bitch instead of the dog as I figure we would not have fared as well. Farring and crash bar helped. We are doing much better now. Still sore as hell and a sneeze will damn near bring tears. I'm 52 and this is my first wreck of any kind short of dirt bikes when I was a kid. I keep playing the scene over in my head wondering what I could have done better. I don't remember hitting the brake but my wife says I did. As they say, it happened so damn fast. I am ready to ride again and to my surprise the wife never hesitated when I asked her if she would ever ride again. Tough ol gal when your finger is going the wrong direction. Dealing with the insurance company but we'll get through it. Got my two up seat for the dog and waiting on the sissy bar. Looking for to getting back in the saddle. Please stay safe guys. There are idiots everywhere!

It happens all the time you just hear about it. Day before yesterday watching news a guy died that’s been riding for years without incident was killed in a “ONE” vehicle accident “ one a straight road” right at an intersection. No one to see what happened but if you ask me someone ran a stop sign and ran him off the road. LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES.

Can't call yourself a biker without a few crashes under your helmet. I'm on my 16th. You were both lucky for sure. Here's where I didn't concentrate at each intersection, where you look way up the road at the intersection; to see who is doing what? By the time my eyes came back to the intersection, here is a mail truck turning left in front of me. My routine for the last 13 years was to use the front brake only. It seemed to feel like slow motion, where I could hear the ABS working, and said to myself as the truck was moving, I said, 'keep going and I'll miss you' and then boom, right between the front of the back wheel I tore the side of the body open at the wheel-well. Didn't even bend the front wheel. But the aluminum frame broke in 4 places and totaled the bike right there.

Got up from the ground, and had my hand swell so I knew something was going on. There's a cashew nut kind of bone that cracked in half at the top of the hand, and had a screw put in place to put it back together. It happened so fast there was nothing you could do as you said. Had to hire a federal kind of lawyer due to it being a gov vehicle. It's not like you're dealing with private insurance, and they more or less got away with murder with the payout. That's money taken from the usps budget so I got shit. Between two types of lawyers I had to hire, I walked away with about 27k; gave my sister 10 grand for her dog's vet bill, the other went to the house account to pay bills. Between the insurance money for the total, the deductible returned, I pulled the rest out of the house account and replaced the same model with all the upgrades made during the previous years.

I'll take a broken hand over a collapsed lung, cracked ribs, and a finger pointing north. The moral of the story; you have to discipline yourself to look way out ahead, follow the speed limit, (the slower the better) and keep looking at each intersection just for that one time.

Smoke67, glad you and your wife are doing well and on the mend. You are right about people just not seeing us, I think everyone should ride a motorcycle and watch the things we see while riding and then maybe they would be more cautious.
