Lost Key

Can anyone PM me if they know how to hot wire a K9. I need to get the bike fixed and need to ride it to the bike shop. Reno is getting close and would hate to miss it. Please use PM as I don't think that type of information should be on the open board. :bang: I know if I'm dumb enough to lose a key I shouldn't be on the streets.

Use your other key

The keys fall out of the ignition quite often and many secure them to the plug wire. I think seeing how it is a switch like a light switch, I would wire nut the two wires together so you can start it and go get a new key from the dealer like narrow37 said.

Look at the switch. It has a (very small) number on it. Call the shop and ask them if they have one of that number. They usually do for goofs like US that lose their keys!! LOL

Did you loose the second key also? A good chance that the dealer with have a spare key or can get one quick. I understand there is not a whole great number of different ones.

Good luck on spare keys... They have to get those from the MFG and it takes about 3-5 days.

I only got one key when I purchased the bike from Coast Choppers (San Diego). They were going to get one but went out of business. I called Big Dog and they said I would have to get a replacement through a dealer. I called the Mad Dog Motorcycles (1000 Palms) who did the 10K service and replaced the tires. They said they have to see the bike in their shop to verify ownership. That means I would have had to rent a truck and trailer and drive over 200 miles just to get a key. I contacted Nelson (Wicked Bastard Cycles :2thumbs: ) and he is getting me the keys but it may take 2-3 weeks for me to have them in hand. I was hoping to be able to start the bike and have someone look at the carb/fuel system before the keys got here. The key did not fall out of the ignition - like a dumb *** I just lost it.

Gary, I have several keys in my tool box. Might be a stretch but one of them may work for you. There was an old thread on here a long time ago about how many combos they have. Some might be suprised to here that it's not many.

Or might be faster to have Nelson or any dealer over night you a new ignition switch. They are not hard to install.

Gary...When you do find your key, or get a new one, here's how I secure my key while in the ignition.!!!

Thank you Ray - I have a problem with the bike and have used everything in my "bag of tricks" to fix it. I guess my bag is to small. I will wait till I get the Keys from Nelson and take it to the custom shop and let a wrench look at it. I was just trying to see if I could get it fixed this week as Reno is getting close. If it was a normal 12V bike I would hot wire it but was not sure about the electronics on these bikes.

When all else fails (trust me I lose keys on a daily basis) the old trusty screwdriver makes fast work out of these fragile switches - then just replace the switch seeing how you lost the key, your going to need to do this anyway.

yeah Gary...Hip's got it:up: alot of us use the carabiner key chain....here is what I use....

Yep... on the stock bdm setup... this is the only way to run

I even do it on my aftermarket key and coil mount.

And I would say all you need to do is pull the coil cover and connect the 2 wires... EASY as pie!!

I turn on ignition, then pull out key and put in pocket. Thats my only way of feeling safe about the key.
