Lost ignition key

Wow! I can actually contribute here. My 02 Boxer's key could come out and I thought that was cool cuz I would start and pull the key out and stick it in my pocket. But cuz I have a bad case of CRS (can't remember $hit) I forgot to pull the key out and lost it a couple of keys. This was back in 03-04 time frame. I finally got tired of that and replaced the ignition switch and it's never come out since. I have also kept a spare key in my wallet for the last 7 years just in case.

I suggest you change the switch. It's not that expensive and then you won't be worrying about it. As much as you think you will pull it out and stick it in your pocket, eventually you will forget and you might end up stranded. Just my 2 cents.

Gordon, you're probably not guna wana hear this, but there are only like 10 different ignition keys for BDs. Your key slot has your ignition number stamped just above the keyhole. I know from PLENTY of firsthand experience (have lost several, not from falling out wile riding but from CRS syndrome! :bang: ), have lost several. Always carry and extra in my wallet!

PS. All you gota do is go to a dealer with your ignition number and they'll give you a new key. Gateway Big Dog in St. Louis now stocks my ignition number!:lol::2thumbs::cheers:

So if you go around to 10 BDM members, you're gonna roll away with at least 1?

Somebody had a thread on this and came up with this idea, one of these plastic hooks, so they don't dammage by rubbing against anything, and you clip it to your plug wire. Then just unhook it from the plug wire and pocket it when you get where you are going, and if your key ever falls out while riding......well there it is dangling from your plug wire!! That's what I do now.

$2.50 miracle cure to lost keys......won't work for CRS syndrome!!

Mine has never came out(08 K-9) but I took an old shoe lace and made about a 2 or 3 inch circle, put my key on it and loop it around the plug wire when I ride. Takes just a few seconds to do.

I received only one key from the former owner.
Called Bikers Dream of Atlanta and ordered another one for $12.95 so don't know about the BD dealer "giving" you one but for a charge.

On the BD site posted above it says they are in stock but only in grey.
Again shipping for one is too much $$$.

Keep the good ideas coming.

Those of us that have been around here for a while have heard this story so many times....including my own story. When it happens to you the only thing more stupid is using the screw driver attachment on your swiss army knife to turn the bike off..... :bang: what a moron...now I need to ride bitch back to the house for a spare key.

BD did replace it with a non-falling-out switch, but the bike doesn't move until the spark plug wire clip is attached and a spare is not far away......lesson learned. :)

My 07 key fell out. For the first year I always checked it and it would not come out. Then one day the clutch cable and the key fell out on the same trip. I replaced the ignition switch.

This is a good idea. I'll have to try it. My key has never came out, but I dont have any other keys or rings on my bike key. They rattle around and rub on the chrome until you have a nice black and scratched mark on your bike.

Mine was able to come out fairly easy. I thought just keep an eye on it .It will be fine. I could pull it out any time and even turn it off with no key using my finger nail. No problem right! Wrong. The only smart thing I did was put my extra key attached under my seat.
Sure enough I'm all cleaned up; bike is show room clean and I'm off to the local bike night. I'm sitting at a light minding my own business on a four lane and a corvette pulls up next to me. I rev it a few times he revs it a few times and it is on. A quarter mile later in about 12 seconds I look down and no key. SHIT !
I went back to that strech of road and walked it for 20 minutes. Low and behold there is. the key is in the middle of the road. In two pieces run over. Plastic end broke off but the metal key part still good. Now I use a small diameter plastic telephone wire type key chain . I hook it around the petcock lever.
