Gymrat You said you replaced the voltage regulator did you make sure you had a good ground to frame at the regulator then did you check to see if you had the correct hook up at the battery here is a picture

I was wrong, I brought it in to have the VR replaced but it was never done, the VR was not available. I will call the local dealer to see if it is still covered.

What do you all think...could the problems I'm experiencing be caused by the VR?

Just an update for everyone who were kind enough to offer suggestions to help me with my problem; I decided to take the dog into the dealer this morning. I was told by the Svc Manager that the new EHC's were much more reliable. Does anyone have any knowledge of this? I told him about the Wire Plus harness as a fix for the EHC problems, he wasn't aware of this. Also suggested that he get on this site to learn about some of the fixes you all have figured out.

As soon as I hear about the cause and fix to my problems I will let you know.

Thanks again....

Sounds like your voltage regulator went south. The first time mine went out was just after I rode down a wet road. The speedo went haywire and about 2 miles down the road I lost all power. Sounds like your issue.

There are two 10 gauge cables coming up from under the bike, one black and one red with shrink wrap on it, pictured above. Those go to the Votage regulator under the front of the bike. If yours hadn't been in for the VR recall, then the defective ones were known for doing exactly what yours did.

You can leave that disconnected and hook the other cables up to see.

If it is the VR hopefully it is covered. And if that caused other damage the dealer said they would talk with Big Dog about it.

I just talked with the local Big Dog dealer and he said that Big Dog rtold him that the EHC was the problem and that the VR would not cause the EHC to go bad. Any thoughts?

The first VR that went out on my bike spiked when it went out, cooked the EHC and the battery. BDM replaced it all. The second VR that went out didn't hurt the EHC. But neither time did the breaker get tripped.

Just wanted to let you all know what the fix was for my problem. But first let me say again what the symtoms were; Left turn signal worked intermittingly and the headlight would only stay on high beam. I was riding in a light drizzel when I lost all power.

The fix was a new EHC. They told me the VR was good but they did do the upgrade.

I rode yesterday got caught in heavy rain and the dog had no problems. I did buy the replacment module from bdmridgeback and will be replacing the EHC at the end of summer.

Thanks again for all your input, very much appreciated.

Brother, "WHOEVER" told you this, "I would NOT DEAL WITH WHATSOEVER ON ANYTHING"! Hell No!

Lying or Stupid, take your pick!

VR is exactly what it's called a Voltage "REGULATER"! Where do you think the voltage to power your EHC comes directly from? And if the power is not "regulated", what problems could arise?

And they said: "your VR was OK, but they UPGRADED it anyway"?...I'm sorry, but what the 'F for? If it's good, IT'S GOOD!

BDM is getting a "VERY" bad name due to some of it's "UN-QUALIFIED" so called dealers. But it's not just BDM dealers alone, it's a lot of "wanna be" motorcycle dealerships of different manufactures! When I here that people are told this SH#T!, and that's exactly what it is "BULL SH#T"! It pisses me off!

Leave 'em Brother!...Let 'em Die and Go Under!

Good Luck!:2thumbs:

The VR was upgraded because it had a recall that was never accomplished. I spoke with the customer service individual and he said that the VR culd not cause the EHC to go bad. Of course I mentioned that some of you guys had the same problem and that Big Dog took care of it.

Deadone, I agree with your logic and I put it to the customer service guy the same way. He couldn't tell my why the VR was upgraded.

Gym,
He couldn't, because he didn't want to tell you that the previous one was "BAD"! That happens a lot. You know, "If you can't say anything good, just don't say anything at all"!
If you want to help yourself out, read this: http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/dog-pound/13995-i-have-theory.html I have a theory, posted in the pound by KnotSo

I just put a new battery in. I first connected the ground and when I began connecting the hot or positive side, one wire coming from one of the black modules (the one closest to the battery) sitting on the EHC sparked and caused the lights to come on and the starter (I believe) to click and made the battery terminal very hot.

Manual says connect positive first. Disconnect negative first.
